Unhappy Mortgage for service costs

Hi All

Just spoken to Poole Audi regarding the service due on my car (52 Audi A4 Avant 2.5TDI Sport non Q). Based on the following items required (probably) they are looking for £1620.

1. 80k Service
2. Cambelt and waterpump
3. Front Pads and Discs
4. Rear Pads and discs

Salisbury Audi wanted nearly £2k but they eventually got it down to £1600 and Williams Automotive will do the lot for just over £1300 using Audi parts.

Question 1.

If I'm having the cambelt and water pump replaced, (including pulleys tensioners etc) is there anything else I should replace at the same time?

Question 2.

Should I use Audi (just in case the cambelt goes) or Williams Automotive (Indipendant) who will use the same parts but save me £300 minimum.

Question 3.

The clutch may need replacing soon, but how do I know whether it really does need it, and some people have said that the fly wheel may need replacing at the same time, total cost of this is £1000. How can I test without having them take everything appart to view it and charge me for the pleasure.

Question 4.

Should I sell the car as is and buy a newer low mileage one and put the money I would have spent on servicing into the new car?

Thanks for your help

A bit of a dilema eh!

Do you really like the car? If so, get Williams to do the belt and service. Do the brakes yourself (or with a mates help - they are quite easy to do, but will take about 4 hrs total). Parts for the brakes will be £160 or so from GSF/Europarts for OEM stuff - not the cheap stuff.

If any of them do the belt service, get the thermostat changed too. About an extra £80???

Clutch - not sure, I tend to own/drive autos. However, the wife's Bora is a manual! Not sure if you have an inspection hatch for the clutch. Not sure what the symptoms would be if it was on it's way out.

Selling? Depends up how much you'll get for it, what you will get instead and will you be back in the same boat next year?

I think you may be right, probably get the service and cambelt done by Williams and do the brakes myself (just being lazy, but if it saves about £400 then worth it).

I was thinking about a 330D M Sport but my wife says it will be too pretentious so I can't have it !!!!

Selling the car would mean spending out more money on a car I know nothing about the history, so probably better to pay the costs, keep the car and run it into the ground.

Cheers for your advice

Just to add my tuppence I live in the same area it seems, and have used both companies, and had good experiences with both. One thing you could do, is get Poole Audi to price match, sometimes they will do it, or get very close, as they love winning business from independents it seems......

Only works on things like brakes, cam belts, generally they won't price match the services due to the perceived value? on the Audi stamp in the service book!

If you had the cambelt done at Williams and it broke you'd be covered just the same as you would if you had spent the extra and had it done at Audi, providing Williams are VAT registered (I presume they are)?

Will try asking Poole Audi to match but if not then go with Williams. Gary did mention that if anything goes wrong with the cambelt then Audi would be liable to provide a replacement car whilst Audi dealt with the damage to the engine, so assume he would be VAT regisered. Will keep you posted.

Have you looked at ebay - Stoke / Stafford Audi advertise A6 2.5 cambelt change for £395 ( that doesn't include water pump). I'm due the same and whilst neither location is close I'm hoping my local dealer will get close / if not match the price. Stoke also quoted me for service / water pump and pricing was ok ( I did wonder if the cambelt alone was cheap and they'd recover with extras - seems not to be the case).
