Default Strange Noise becoming more frequent..?

imagine hitting a tyre with a hammer.

you'd get a sort of reverberationg 'bong' sound - like the sound tyres make as they settle as they are being inflated on the rim for the first time.

Well i am getting this as i drive about.

Seems to be coming from the right hand side of the vehicle, when going slower, and maybe after having braked or gone around a roundabout and then straghtened up, smooth roads or rough.

tyres all fine and up to presure and brakes working fine too. Suspension seems fine and body roll not increased.

Cant get it to occur to order at the moment, seems to come if the car is warm or cold.

Dunno - any ideas? its definately getting worse. i have a quattro avant.

cheers

dan

Perhaps it's your wheel bearings... just guessing mind, as I know they normally make a humming sound.

Checked whether all the wheel bolts are tight?

I had the same sound on an old French car, turned out to be the suspension. I think (it was a long time ago) that the coil is spinning slightly on the top mount, hence it makes the sound when you straighten the wheel. Try turning the wheel from full lock to full lock when not moving and see if it happends (make sure it is a dry day as well).

Cracked/broken spring on the front - you do cross lots of speed cushions don't you?

The crack/break will be on the first coil - either top or bottom. If the latter it will be difficult to see beause it may be hidden by the spring pan.
