Angry New car tax rules

My first question is when do the new car tax rules come in:

a. 1st January 2009
b. 1st April 2009

My next question is:

Can you surrend the tax from your current car, sorn the car for a week then get a new tax disc just before the change?

Being one of the unlucky owners of a car producing 265g means my car's tax cost is going to rise by £230. Whilst I can afford the money, I simply don't agree with the new system.

Talking What DVLA said

Your car tax will go up to £310 from the 1st April 2009 then up to £455 from the 1st April 2010.

So I asked can I surrender my tax on the 28th March 2009 and renew it on the 1st March 2009? Yes, is the answer, just make sure it registered posting date is the 28th March 2009 for the one month refund.

Then I asked, can I do the same in 2010. Yes is the answer.

I guess the DVLA are going to be busy in March 2009...........

I'm suprised by this as I'm sure I read somewhere that they had taken measures to prevent this from happening and obtaining benefit by doings so.

If you get away with it good luck

Unfortunately my car was registed a couple of months too late so I'm already paying £400 now

Thought you had sold that car. Answer is 1st April.

Best bet is to re-tax now for six months (to 28/2/09) and apply for a refund (less the month that you lose) on your old tax disc. Then buy 12 months at renewal for £210 (if car registered before 23/3/06) to 28/2/10. For the year to 28/2/11 you will pay £440. This delays the big jump in VED as long as possible. Hope it helps.

Default Got a boxster now.

Merlot,

Yep, sold the S4 and bought a low mileage 550 annivesary boxster. Posted here because the porsche side of tyresmoke seems deserted.

When I had my 987S I used boxa.net. All the usual crap with owners beating their chests knocking the TT/Z4/SLK etc and S owners telling 'normal' Boxster owners that they are girls...but some useful stuff nevertheless.

Exactly what I did on my S3 which is due to jump from £210 to £300 - even paying a bit extra for the six months rather than twelve, the saving will be £30-40 for that car. Just find it bizarre TBH that this car costs more to tax than my RS4 which (fortunately) just misses the cut by a few months

http://www.hm-treasury.gov.uk/media/...8_chapter4.pdf

Page 73 of the budget (page 17 of that pdf) item 4.71

Quote:

Budget 2008 announces that vehicle excise duty (VED) refunds will be restricted to
the registered keeper of a vehicle and applicable only when a vehicle has: been stolen,
destroyed, sold or otherwise disposed of; become eligible for a nil licence; been declared as
statutorily off-the-road; or been permanently exported.
This will help ensure that motorists

cannot avoid paying a pre-announced rate of VED.

Amusingly this is in the chapter title "Fairness and Opportunity For All"

hahahah at least Gordon has a sense of humour.
