Seem to remember hearing somewhere that on 4WD vehicles you should replace all the rubber at the same time. Something about any big diffences in wear between front and back would put stress on the 4WD system. Anyone know whether this is right (and applicable to quattro).

Not absolutely essential on a torsen, three-diff quattro Audi, but most owners prefer to buy tyres in sets.

Anyone remember the [850 shape] V70 R AWD? Now that DID require equal tread depths all corners. Nightmare when you got a puncture!

Cabmac, in reply to original question you only really have to replace an axle at a time, not all 4 although as you have found most tyre dealers and Audi would like you to replace all in one go.

The shoulders on my Conti's also wore quickly but found that mostly to underinflating and hard cornering because the Conti's performed so poorly in handling.

I changed all of mine as I only had .5mm more on the rears than the fronts after 17K miles to F1 GSD3's, £520 all in. However I did find them for £116 per corner, they ran out though before I could book the car in and couldn't supply for another couple of weeks, hence why I went for the £520 for 4 option.

As for pressures I'm running at 41 fronts and 38 rears at present and the ride is a lot better then when on 39/35, not a crashy through bumps and pot holes and the car doesn't nose dive into corners as much.

I have 3.0L quattro avant (only recently acquired) what tyre pressure does this require? It has 16" wheels.

    Thanks.

There should be a sticker on the B pillar when you open the door informing you of the recommended tyre pressures.

Either that or on the inside of the petrol cap.

    Thanks,

I've looked for those, but can't find anything - the last A3 I had, had them on the passenger side (it was LHD in Germany) but not on this A4 I have!!

I'll have look in the manual then.

    Cheers.

Also check inside the glove box. There should be a sticker somewhere.

If my experience is anything to go by then you don't have to change all 4 tyres together. I recently had a slight accident with a roundabout, front n/s alloy wheel totally u/s. Put spare on which was different make to the other front tyre. Needed a new alloy and lower arms, work carried out by Swindon Audi via insurance, although they put the tyre on the new alloy they just stuck it in the boot leaving the 2 odd tyres at the front.
Have recently replaced my rears with Goodyears and this has certainly made the car feel more sure footed.
