Default The whine is back

My S4 54 Cab when I first got it would occasionally make a whine\grind noise for the first 30 seconds when starting and driving. As the issue is ittermitent the dealer has told me they could not replicate the problem and therefore could not fix it.

Well now that the problem is back I offered to video the fault so there is a fixed record, to be told they would need to see the fault happen at the dealership. Needless to say my blood started to boil at this point.

I ve heard of two faults:

1. Issue with some chain oiler taking time to fill.

2. Issue with a belt tensioner.

The issue seems to occur when it is cold and damp, probably why it didn't happen in the summer.

Anyway, hopefully some of you guys have a idea what it might be which I can communicate to the stealers.

Thanks

I'm sure this was to do with the cam-chain tensioner.

I don't believe the 4.2V8 has any belts, it's all chain driven, but could be wrong.

I guess that is what the dealer would like you to believe. My view is it doesn't sound healthy so I want it sorted out before the car goes out of warranty.

I take it you've seen the similar thread a page back?

Get it fixed by the dealer.

I have being doing a bit of research on what could be possibly causing the whine noise on startup.

If you could all let me know your thoughts:

I found out the tensioner for the chain is hydralic and operated from oil pressure. As I only get the noise for the first 30 seconds or so, is it possible that the tensioner on the chain is not activating quickly enough?

My next thought is it something to do with the water pump which is making the noise on colder mornings. The water temp on my car always reads slightly above 90, what do most S4's run at?

Hopefully Audi will get to the bottom of the fault shortly.

On a plus point they are replacing the alarm control box tommorow, so hopefully that will be the end of the problems with the alarm.

Mine is spot on 90 everyday, although when colder it'll take more time to heat up.
