Hi Ivor, welcome to TSN
High performance air intake kits are very few and far between for the A8. In fact, I'm not sure if anyone in the UK does one for our beauties I know that A8_Mark fitte one to his 4.2 QS some time ago, but don't think he noticed any real gains, just a louder engine note |

If you do fit it, make sure the filter is fed with a good cold air supply. Warm air gushing in will give you loads of problems.
You could put a cone filter (non-oily) INSIDE the existing housing connected directly to the MAF. Don't use K & N oily things, as they ruin your MAF.

[/ QUOTE ] They are such a waste of time, you can never sheild them off well enough, the air box is made as a box for a purpose. You would be better ducting air into the box rather than messing about with cone filters. Oh and for balance I use a K&N panel filter, as long as you dont over oil them they are fine, its not the device so much as the user that causes MAF problems. |

If you're interested in improving your intake system you might want to have a read through this Autospeed article (links to the other four parts at the bottom of the article).
For those who can't get to it, over five installments the article documents the practical investigation of pressure drops (termed 'negative boost' by the author) in the induction system of an Audi S4 (the old 5 cylinder 100-based model). The conclusions are that the MAF and in particular the wire mesh on either end, plus the ducting to and from the airbox were responsible for most of the drop in pressure (and therefore performance). The solution was to remove the mash from the MAF and fabricate a ram-air duct to feed the stock airbox with positive pressure. Anyone aiming to improve performance by fitting an aftermarket filter to the A8 would therefore be well advised to look at the MAF and ducting first... /

[/ QUOTE ] On some models the mesh is palstic and can easily be cut away, others are metal..........and will be a bit harder. The MAF is really fragile, so be careful.

I always thought that mesh was too dense
I don't know about airflow rate but temperature plays a big part on these cars; in this cold weather the car seems to exhibit a lot more response than in the summer so I'm looking for some sort of heat baffle to line the air box and air pipe.

I actually have an LLTek Cone intake on my 98. I left the Airbox on and just installed the cone inside the box. Honestly, I have never noticed a difference but then again, a K&N filter would cost about as much as I paid for my LLTek. It was a complete bitch to install tho cus the brackets that screw into the box weren't wide enough and i had to do some banging and bending and prying to get it to mount right. I agree that there are very few if ANY other intake options available for the D2 except for my lil LLTek and the K&N drop in filter.

been told that a cone filter and induction kit would serve no gain on my 98 S8 except more noise infact i was told i may loose a little performance which aint a good thing.
