Just when I think everything is ok, the car bites back. Can anyone suggest what may be causing my 2002 A6 1.9Tdi 130 to struggle to start when really cold. The glow plugs, battery and glow plugs timer have all been checked and are working fine. When I try to start the car, it always turns over and fires, but it chucks some smoke out and the battery feels like it is about to die. The engine revs take about 3 to 4 seconds to reach idle speed and the battery indicator takes about the same to get to around 12 to 14 volts. After a quick press of the accelerator, the engine is smooth and starts normally all day long unless it is left for several hours (whilst at work) then it does the same thing again. It just feels like it will pack up at any time. Other threads suggest fuel pumps, etc but I would be surprised if it was something serious like that as it runs smoothly once it has been started. It has NEVER failed to start yet...... Any ideas?

I get exactly the same problem first thing in the morning so it is probabally cold start.
I have a 1998 A3 1.6, throttle body is clean and fine, idle speed is also fine. It happens more when I turn the wheel as I am pulling away but as Goulders mentioned, one rev in the morning and will be fine the whole day. I never thought much of it until I saw this post... Any advice would be much appreciated |

I should have mentioned what actually happens, basically the car feels like it is dying out until revved and then springs back to life..but like I said only when first started.
I've also got a feeling it is underpowered but then again it may be me whose just a moaning goat..any ideas on how I can check easily? It could be down to the fact that its nothing or I have 18" wheels or there is actually a problem somewhere. It just seems alot less 'Torquer' then most cars around that category. |

Is there an ambient temperature sensor on the 1.9TDi? If that's not working correctly it may not do the necessary enrichment, glow plug, WHY for a cold start making every start a warm start.
Is there any fault codes logged on the engine ECU? |

The garage has said that everything is fine. They have checked the temp sensor, glow plugs and I have done the battery. I dont think it has been plugged into a code reader, but would that pick up anything else that could cause this problem?

I have just had the error codes scanned and it has come back with an intermitant fault with the G62 coolant sensor. I understand that this is likely to be the problem and that it is a common fault. The only concern I have is that on another website it says that if this sensor is faulty, the glow plugs may come on longer, which is not the case. They hardly come on at all. Is it likely that the reverse is true and that it wont switch the glow plugs on properly. Also, I have been told that the G62 sensor also controls the engine temperature display. That display has been fine and seems to work correctly. Is there another sensor for the instrument display or am I just a bit thick in the head!!!! I think the G62 sensor is a 2 in 1, 1 to the ECU, 1 to the dash, it is unusual for both sides or the sensor to fail.
On other forums there is talk of a "new" sensor which has a green top.

The engine remains at a steady 90 degrees and doesn't go anywhere. Is that the normal temp? Also, is there 2 sides to the g62 sensor. One for the ecu and one for the instrument panel? When you say it is a 2 in 1, what exactly does that mean? ie: 1 actual thermostat which sends 2 different signals or 2 thermostats in 1 unit that send 2 different signals. I have got a new sensor and will fit it in the morning, but I am just wanting to rule out other things. Hope this makes sense!!!!!!!!!!!
