Thumbs down dip stick broken

i have just bought a A4 avant 05 2.0tdi,
i was checking the oil level and after cleaning the stick when i removed it the bottom half of the stick had snaped in the engine
i rang the dealer and and they told me not to start the engine and towed the car back to the dealership.

anyone out there had this problem?

That's a first to me. Never ever heard of a snapped/broken dip stick!

Probably, the previous owner was a bit to ham-fisted in pushing the dipstick back and might have bent it, straightened it and weakened it as a result.

All sorted now?

Might be almost as common as the rusting door blade, corroded windscreen wiper caps, door handle covers falling off...Very common on the B5 was the tube itself, and the parts don't look to have altered much for B6/7 :-(

A real pain if bits drop back into the oil/tube, when the replacement part takes about 2 seconds to fit.... yet on my 94/95 cab almost all the end/measure portion is plastic and just fine...the B5 has a mostly metal stick with just a small 'guide' part in plastic...assume that's the bit you lost?

I've had the same problem on my X reg A3 1.8T for the past 18 months. The dipstick is slowly losing the yellow plastic when removing it. I think it was damaged when I got the car but only noticed it 18 months ago.

My partner's dad was a mechanic, albeit a long time ago, but he claims it shouldn't be anything to worry about if a bit of plastic falls into where the dipstick sits, the oil filter will pick it up. I mite just pick up another dipstick from a breakers just in case

Default dip stick now sorted

i didnt risk running the engine, sent the car to the dealer and they removed the sump and sorted it with new oil and dip stick.

if your dip stick has gone hard get a replacement!
