The running costs of high performance cars are dominated by a number of factors
1. - standing costs such as tax, insurance and depreciation. Tax on a pefrormance car is going to be £400+ per annum, insurance is probably min £650 per annum and could be over £1000 per annum. Depreciation is by far and away the biggest due to rising fuel and taxation costs. Most performance cars lose £1000s or £10000s per year. For example those stupid enough to have bought new E92 M3 or E60 M5s would have lost huge amounts in very short periods of time. Even those people who have subsequently bought what appear to be very cheap used E92 M3 or E60 M5 will find out on resale that there is no such thing as a free lunch.

2. Running costs such as fuel, tyres and servicing. Most performance cars are around the 20mpg or less mark and tend to prefer to drink the expensive stuff like V Power. So typically a tank of 60 - 70 litres is consumed very quickly and costs ~ £84 for about 250 - 280 miles.
Tyre prices have shot up over the last year and unfortunately most performance cars drive better on expensive footwear - even worse some like the E92 M3 have special thin soled footwear only good for 5000 miles max. Expect to pay £250 - £320 per shoe for this special thin soled footwear.
Servicing. Others have mentioned that this is a key issue but in my experience modern performance cars whilst being slightly more expensive to service are not orders of magnitude higher than normal cars. It might take slightly longer to service an M3 and yes you will get hit by the additional labour charge of your BMW/Audi/Porsche/Mercedes dealer (over £100 per hour at most these days) but in general most parts are not super expensive. Certain spark plugs excepted.

That's what I thought. Nothing really special to justify such high servicing costs.

Running costs like tyres & fuel - expected with such thin rubber.

Don't know what you lot are banging on about, it's not that bad!

Just saw the bill for the service on my M5 before I bought it - what's wrong with £347?? Oh, hang on, that was just for the plugs.......

Then there was air filters x2, gearbox oil, diff oil, engine oil....oh, and new discs and pads all round. Oh, and new rubber x4!

That'll be £4k - thank you sir. Lad at work has just bought a tidy 2000 E46 323ci for only £3.5k, how comical is that!

Been reading this thread with interest in anticipation of chnaging my porker next year. Re porker servicing, shock horror, I thought it was quite reasonable especially when I supplied my own Mobil 1 from Costco. The best thing about Porsche servicing is the 20k mile or 2 year fixed interval. I think the GT2 has a lower inspection (vs oil change) as it doesn't follow the 20kmile/2 year regime. I even managed 40k miles out of my front tyres and 30k miles from my front brake pads and discs - £450 to change at an indy.

Bargain yes but damaged repaired means it will be MEGA hard to shift in the future especially with the values of undamaged cars on the slip big time.
