This really doesn't sound good news for those of us who may occasionally make progress...
Drivers will have no escape from new speed cameras "Drivers who slow down briefly or who make a detour from the main route will still be caught because up to 50 of the cameras will work together in a network. They can be positioned more than 15 miles apart and will automatically read numberplates and transmit data instantly to a penalty processing centre". |

Might as well stick a 30mm cannon on top and shoot those that don't comply.

They are likely to be deployed first on long rural A roads, where crashes occur frequently but in many different places, making it impractical to deploy conventional speed cameras
Roughly translated as: They will be deployed first on long rural A roads, where people who live there and know the roads well, will generate a fortune in fines over a 15 mile radius. Convential speed cameras would not generate anywhere near the same amount of money in these areas. Why is it that people persist with the argument that speed causes accidents but the words "inappropriate speed" are never used? And £300k a network - amazing how they can find this money in the present climate isn't it? The UK really needs a backlash against all these cameras, id cards, etc, etc. Now, where are those old tyres and the petrol can.......

£300k and a very high level of compliance?
I can't see these taking off, if everyone sticks to the limit then they make no money so can't pay for the cameras. Unless of course they are sneaky, 15miles apart you say, mmmm lets do that and then not tell people we are doing it. Easy money. |

They just need more police on the road - which will also try and help to prevent knife crime at the same time - to find and punish bad drivers. Not people who drive a bit over the limit. Bad drivers is what kills people, not speed.

how much does it cost for a panda car and a policeman for a year?
the dickheads. nothing makes people drive more sensibly than a real policeman. and if there's an accident, they can help. A camera cant call an ambulance or divert traffic. so sad we live in a world run by numnuts.

Well this has decided my next car for me - if they are mass deployed.
320d instead of a 335d then - bit of a knee jerk re-action but we'll see. On the flip slide average speed cam's are the only method to keep speed down that works but i can't help but feel that SO many decent people are going to get caught out just from tiny lapses where they are doing 35 in a 30. |
