Default what car for 1k max (just for a 4 mile commute!)

I need a cheapo car for 1k (max) for a 4 mile commute, age/colour/spec un-important. just looking for something fun and interesting for chugging to and from work. Only caveat is I dont want a huge engine as I need to keep insurance costs sensible.

Any inspirational idea's chaps?....

106 GTi in budget, good fun!

On the other hand, how about 130 HP from a 1.3 Turbo in a car smaller then the Yaris? YRV Turbo!

My thoughts, too.

Or a moto-scooter if you're leg-movement averse...

106 Gti, or 106 Rallye, if you can find an original/straight one, good call.

Whatever you end up with, make sure you let it warm up, 4 miles might not be enough to thoroughly warm the engine and you'll may end up rotting exhausts and stuff. Just a thought.

There are a million choices really, if you're not worried about MPG, how about a 'modern classic' and insure it for peanuts through Adrian Flux ? 944 or 924S ? MK1 MR2 ? MK2 Golf Gti ? Lots of choices. You'll get a useable MK1 MX-5 for that money (don't knock it 'til you've tried it) too, see here.

Let us know what you end up with

MX-5 would be near the top of the list for me too. In fact, I can't think of anything better for the money to fit your criteria.
