Default Cheap Fun Car - Cheap Insurance for a 20 year old?

I am considering a cheap fun summer car to buy at the end of my uni course, drive for a few months in summer then sell before I start working. I would like something fun to drive, relatively cheap to insure and run. I just fancy something to enjoy for a short time rather than being stuck with a Micra for the rest of my uni course!

I was thinking along the lines of:

- Caterham/Westfield or a kit car similar to these, maybe Robin Hood or a Tiger
- 205GTI 1.6/1.9
- Golf GTI Mark 1 or Mark 2

Can anyone suggest anything else, had any experience with the cars listed and any general comments please.

Cheers
Ben

Considered an MX5?

Could get a early Mk1 for £2000-3000, it'll have rock solid reliability and is superb fun!
Great to have the top down in the summer (or winter) too!
Insurance on my 2000, W-reg 1.8i was £900 fully comp at 20.

Anything with GTI in the name means the insurance company will take you down a back alley and ask you to touch your toes....

The insurance on any of those cars is going to be a killer for a 20 year old .

Yep I was worried about that tbh. I thought maybe a limited mileage, classic insurance policy for a few months rather than the entire year may not take my pants down quite so badly. I could get my dad to insure it but I'd still be a named driver so same problem.
How about an original Mini or a 106 Rallye to add to the list??

Could be an idea as I guess the insurance companies wouldn't be quite so harsh on a 114 as it isn't exactly the most loved car amongst car thieves!
