Any one experienced them? They seem pretty good, but are they??!!

ALL 3rd party warranties I have come accross including this shower are a waste of time and money... Excuses not to pay include;

Has to have comletely failed - cannot be intermittent. Well thats just about every electrical issue out then

Dont cover things which "could be" pre-esxisiting. Unless they inspect the car before taking out the policy then they can always use this. Any failure can be argued as having been waiting to happen..

The amount they pay is based on typical payouts - they make money doing this. Put the same amount in a building society to cover for unforeseen issues.

You've got to think how these third party warranty companies exist. Simply, they pay out less than they take in.

Audi warrantes however are different. Whilst the labour rate at your main dealer might be £110 + vat, it doesn't 'cost' them that. This is the way I have always looked at it........

Using nicely rounded figures, an unexpected bill paid privately at Audi for £1400 - fixing say a 2003 S4 gearbox dropping reverse - would make you glad for spending £1000 on an Audi warranty. However, the work might have only 'cost' Audi £600 in parts and labour. Thus Audi make profit.

Anyway, I'd much rather self insure as discussed previously here and here.

1. The best warranty available to cars over 2 years old is the GOLD (not Platinum). This specifically lists what items are covered. Anyway, I explained the huge difference between them and they eventually offered me a "STAR" warranty - this is effectively the trade version of the Platinum warranty - so even if you car is over 2 years old, it covers everything save a specificed list of exclusions.

TBH, i feel far more comfortable with this approach. The problem with the warranties that list what is covered is that I, off the top of my head, can't imagine everything that could go wrong. If everything is covered, better peace of mind.

Also, and the best bit, they offered this warranty for no additional price over and above the Gold warranty during negotiations.

2. Get written confirmation they will pay BMW labour rates and only fit genuine parts (i saw a post here previously where WD insisted on a reconditioned part). I got confirmation in email form that they were happy to pay £100 plus VAT per hour and would use genuine new BMW parts only.

3. Even if you specify Wear and Tear, any wear and tear claim in the first 90 days is excluded (look at the small print) - remarkable that 25% of the policy year is not covered. This is so that people don't buy a warranty to fix a pre-existing problem. I explained that as I was transferring from a BMW warranty, I would not have a gao in cover and any problems would be fixed by BMW. Tus, there was no incentive for me to make a fraudulent claim onWD trying to fix a pre-existing condition. They agreed to waive the 90 day exclusion.

And finally, they agreed I could pay interest free over 6 months.

Avoid this company! They say all mechanical and electrical parts are covered against failure and accordingly "there is no restrictive list of parts, we simply incluse all such parts". Oh yes there are and you will find out when you try to claim

Make a Twitter account and 'tweet' your bad experience to them, they will listen. They did with me, the MD e-mailed me a few hours later. If not, take it up with Quentin Wilson. You will get there in the end.
