  1. have I broken the lock?

ok bought replacement locks but how the hell do I change them? TIA
  2. have I broken the lock?

I bought my 'starship' 1998 sharan tdi back in march and a week later it dropped a valve! hunted for months for an AHU engine had it fitted then a week later sprung a leak then starter motor burnt out and so did the ignition switch due to some dodgy wiring. Luckily I bought an engine with ancillaries so starter & water pump (leaking bit) were 'free' and only cost me the switch + labour. So you can imagine I've been watching the clock for the last couple of weeks counting up my 'free' miles before something else goes wrong and it happened on my return journey new years eve, went to unlock the car and all windows opened and due to some dodgy wiring to the drivers door I couldn't close them so I drove around the corner out of sight of the smoking area and wiggled the wires until the windows closed, good job. Dropped my friend off then parked at home grateful to be back without breaking down and when I went to lock the car the key turned in the lock 2 full times and you've guessed it all windows opened again! Luckily the window switches worked first time with no wiggling but I wasn't about to use the key in the lock again (and passenger lock has never worked with the key) so climbed in from the passenger side and pressed the lock from the inside to set the central locking to lock all doors and haven't touched it since. Is there the slightest chance I haven't got a completely broken lock but something is repairable in there or do I have to face it and get some replacement locks & key? Oh how I wish I had a transit minibus!
  3. which gearbox is this?

Yes I think they do but I didn't want to get my hands dirty looking for it as its in the boot of the car which makes it awkward. At a quick glance there are lots of VW & audi (funnily no seat) signs on it and a few 9 digit codes but nothing thats an obvious 3 digit id code.
  4. which gearbox is this?

I bought an engine with ancillaries & gearbox for my Sharan which came from a 1997 seat cordoba (engine code AHU) but as they are different size vehicles decided to keep the original gearbox incase the ratios were different. I have now put the gearbox on ebay and given all the info I know inc other vehicles which are fitted with the AHU engine of similar size but is there a way of identifying it?
  5. why doesn't the temp drop?

vag-com has reported dash insert fault, apparently its a common problem
  6. 'Hunting' at idle

my old car did this but it wasn't a very compicated machine, turned out the bleed pump was faulty and squirted diesel everywhere when pumped when the fuel filter was changed! Once the bleed pump was changed it didn't hunt any more.
  7. why doesn't the temp drop?

yep, straight up from cold, I've been told there are 2 temp sensors is this right? I changed the blue 4 pin one at the back and have been told there is one at the left too so will look tomorrow.
  8. recently the temp gauge on my 1997 Audi A4 1.9 TDI went up to 120 and light was flashing but engine wasn't over hot (and it now does this from cold) I have had the thermostat & temp sensor changed but it still does this, does the ecu need resetting or is there another problem? the pipes were crunchy and the water was orange which makes me think it could do with a flush too, also when the hose to the heater was disconnected it didn't have a lot of pressure is this normal or does it sound like my pump is on its way out? I'm going to try and book it in for diagnostics as I can't drive it like this

  10. temp sender unit?

Well since the last post I've had the thermostat changed on my 1997 Audi A4 TDI and it still reads hot from cold IYSWIM. Do these read hot when the temp sender unit is knackered as a fail safe? Its worrying the life out of me
  11. overheating

Okay, it was orange as there was no coolant and at some point its had rad weld stuff in it, its now had the thermostat replaced and all water drained and fresh water (will put some coolant in tomorrow) but it still reads 120 even from cold! removed the temp sensor on the back of the block and it still reads 120 so seems like an electrical fault as the engine isn't over hot and the water in the rad & expansion tank are cold and heater blows hot although doesn't seem to circulate very quick when the hose is removed, any ideas?
  12. overheating

    orange!
  13. overheating

thermostat sounds like a nice cheap job (if I haven't baked the head gasket) I haven't looked at it today and don't recall seeing it, where abouts is it located as I'm guessing it should be an easy job for a novice.
  14. overheating

I drove to my parents house (which is 5 miles away)yesterday in my audi A4 TDI and it was fine for the first journey, then a little later drove home and noticed the temp gauge went right up to 120 so pulled over and popped the bonnet. There was water in the resevoir and the pipes were hot but the rad was cold, I gave the pipes a squeeze and they felt like something crunched in them but did blow bubbles into the resevoir. I'm guessing I've got a blockage or the water pump is knackered, any ideas on how I can check these? preferably without getting dirt under my nails
  15. I have a 1996 1.9tdi A4, it states airbag on the steering wheel and on the drivers door frame it states drivers airbag but nothing about passenger airbag or on the dash in front of the passenger so am I safe to assume it hasn't and put my baby seat in the front?
