  1. VW to quit WRC 2016

Another nail in the WRC coffin. http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/motorsport-wrc/updated-volkswagen-quits-world-rally-championship-end-2016 Anybody watching the Wales WRC this week cannot help but be impressed with the skill and entertainment of the drivers and their cars. We just need Ford M-Sport to pick their game up, not amusing to have Hyundai rub their nose in the gravel, especially home gravel.
  2. Ross Brawn to succeed Bernie Ecclestone

Thank fcuk Bernie is going - there is a God.
  3. F1 2016 Season

My days of F1 watching are over (at least on the telly). Yesterdays Mexican race was hardly worthy was it. Lap after lap of watching messers Perez and Massa nose to tail was hardly edge of your seats stuff. Why Hamilton was not penalised for off roading at the first 2 corners and ending up 10 car lengths ahead by the third, no advantage there. Drivers whinging at the engineers, drivers whinging at each other. No decent shots of Claire Williams or Suzi Wollf either I lost the will after lap 28. Remind me - who won ?
  4. BMW M2

Electric memory seats a must, good choice.
  5. Tada!!

Tony the Tart. Lets hope you manage to get it above 60.
  6. For Gatwick we always use Maple Manor Valet parking, been using MM for some 10 years. Never had a problem.
  7. Lime Green TT-RS, anyone?

    Green is good.
  8. Test Drives

Bored at home and fed up with Internet window shopping for cars, I gave my local'ash MB dealer a call, he has a GLA45 for sale. He is prepared to drop the car off (something of a 30 mile round trip) and collect 24hrs later. I explained about my left knee replacement operation and he was quite ok with me driving the car. Its only 4 and a half weeks since the operation and the hospital recommendation (guidelines !) are quite clear, only my surgeon can assess my ability to drive. This is all to do with my ability in completing an emergency stop. My final assessment is in 2 weeks time. The GLA45 is an Auto and any emergency stop would be with my right leg. My insurance company backs up what the hospital says, so I'm awaiting clarity from MB. I have no intention of driving any car until I get the ok from the hospital but it did strike me that MB are going the extra mile to accommodate a test drive, I'm impressed. Have I struck lucky with MB ? I can't imagine Audi being this accommodating.
  9. Top Gear s.23

Just see this on the Beeb, what's the big shake up - Songs of Praise ?
  10. Top Gear s.23

I enjoyed the 911R piece, MB is turning out to be the jewel in the TG crown, the rest of the show was painful, CE is just so not suited for TG, too shouty shouty, over bearing and, well - quite boring. Sabine did not work either, her Germanic mannerisms just didn't quite work, shame really as she could have contributed much more, she works for me..... Perhaps I'm too old but seeing week after week of cars going sideways on the track is pretty dull whether it be the NSX or the 911R - we need fantastic photography, awesome backdrops, the Mustang section did it well. Harris does his bits well, I just don't get RR but I can see his appeal to the teenies out there. The show does not need any fecking stars in any sort of car, kick Jordan into touch - what the feck does he contribute to the show. Top Gear needs to change, this new series underlines the fact, time for bold changes, a change of lanes (not direction) is required.
  11. EuropCar £1 one-way rentals

Stinks to me. Car hire company's normally had casual labour or hired drivers to do this, of course this involved them paying their staff to do this. Now it seems another cost cutting exercise and disposing of the casual drivers (normally older folk or youngsters).
  12. Rich,

Do you have any anecdotes from FMC especially at their European small vehicle design centre at Dunton in Essex. I worked there from 96-99, I was involved in the design of a number of their new engine test labs and their environmental test laboratory (posh phrase for a wind tunnel).

    cheers

    Peter.

Yes, actually, I do, but they're not in the book. Are you talking about the place at South Ockenden? I was there when they were working on the platform share Focus/Volvo V40, the original design had a split tailgate, really cool, and there was a Focus estate with a two piece tailgate under review, I saw that. I also recall them benchmarking it against the Corolla for NVH and was there when a Focus fell of the 'shaker' rig. I also saw a (IIRC) Ford Cougar and thought no-one would buy it. I rather liked visiting there, also went to the place near Cologne (Merkenich?) doing large cars too. But, no it's not in the book!

      Cheers

      Rich

  13. The Mill BLACKBIRD

Real life and CGI just got a whole lot closer, fast forward a bit - would I buy a car depicted in an ad by 'puter, probably not (but then again how would I know !). clever pro mo video though.
  14. Very similar to a K series going pop in a S1 Exige. Painful memories of following an S1 at Croft and the same happening. Like a bomb going off.
  15. Top Gear s.23

Sorry, can't agree, his bit on the F Type could have been so much more, who the feck is he anyway
  16. Windows 10 to 7

Why is it always me.......... For the last 4 months I've been using my MacBook Pro (very nice it is too). Anyway, my Windows 7 laptop has been unused and ignored for months, until last night that is. My clients wants me to do 'some work' from home whilst I'm recovering from my op (how kind of them) and they gave me a Avtivcard fob thing for remote access and instructions on how to log on. Turning on my laptop I got the shock of my life, from nowhere springs fecking Windows 10 and the remote access thingy will not work with MS Edge (whateverthe****thatis) or with Windows 10, a few Googled answers later tells me to recover back to Windows 7 (if Windows 10 is less than 30 days old - which it was not..... ) if I want to allow remote access So I'm stuffed. The only choice I have is to re-install Windows 7, my Dell laptop come with it already pre loaded so how the feck do I do it ? Do I have to buy a new Windows 7 (£££'s) or is there a more sneaky way of doing it Remember now, use only simple words and phrases.
  17. Windows 10 to 7

It was the first thing I asked...... and no it can't
  18. Petrol or Diesel

Having owned both I'm now firmly in the petrol camp. errrrr.... thats about it.
  19. Knee replacement SUV of Joy

The Golf (we tried) you actually sit down into and climb out of, with the GLA you 'sit across' into and the same for getting out. More leg room too.
  20. Knee replacement SUV of Joy

A knee means a new vehicle, now the RS5 of doom has finally gone I'm entertaining the thought of an SUV, mainly because of ease of access, in and out. So with that in mind my desktop survey (+ a little tryout here and there) I've come up with this fag packet selection. Evoque Si4 - 250bhp RSQ3 - 335 bhp MB GLA45 - 350ish bhp All just sat in not yet driven. The Evoque is a stunna without a doubt, problem is I had to climb up into the seat and worst still I had to drop out of the seat, not a good start. Dash layout was fine, visibility a little restricted, performance on paper a little short of expectations. RSQ3, ticked a lot of boxes, again abit of a climb to get in, getting out was much easier, layout was spot on. Looks are abit weird, still think it sits quite high. Performance is assured. GLA45, the dark sheep, Jane pointed it out and and we visited the local MB showroom, access was easy Peasy, layout was awesome, a really nice place to be, looks pretty good, performance again is assured. My head & heart says the GLA45.
  21. Knee replacement SUV of Joy

I did look at the F Pace, but the one I want sells for £65k. Moving on........
  22. Knee replacement SUV of Joy

I do agree, the Evoque is the least desired amongst 'em, but it does look achingly nice. The GLA45 is by far the most suitable for my use and looks pretty damn good, I'm sure the RSQ3 will sound just about right but I'm not totally sold on its looks. After the RS5 debacle I'm reluctant to even own another Audi. Never owned a Merc either, I'm sure I will not be disappointed.
  23. Knee replacement SUV of Joy

Petrol only I'm afraid.... YUes - unfortunately just a little too rich for me, no way could I get that past her !
  24. Top Gear s.23

Not sure what to expect, but I knew that it would be a far from polished show (and it was), this new series will flop but hopefully will come bouncing back for the second series. Been mentioned before, but CE was just too SHOUTY SHOUTY, he sounded like a male Davina McCall, why the feck do presenters have to fecking SHOUT all the time. I was hoping for a new format, a new style, ffs its about time The Stig and the various stars in the crap car was put out of their collective misery. TG is at a crossroads, I hope it sorts itself out.
  25. Anyone else going, we are there for the weekend, another birthday treat no less. Luckily found a nice hotel to stay at.
