jgreenwell
Hi folks, just a quick question. I am looking to buy a Passat TDI, around a 1998-99 model, but have noticed that quite a few of them have a fair amount of miles on them (around 110-130K) How reliable are they with this kind of mileage on them, and is it an issue?? Any comments on this, or anything in general regarding the passat would be a great help. Cheers folks
Snail
The VW TDi engine will easily last into the 200s. I purchased an TDi 90 with 105 on the clock, she's still purring like a kitten at 175k. As long as the car has been reguarly serviced, you should have no problems at all. Gaunty
Snail's right, these TDi's are almost bomb proof, you'd be very unlucky if you had any problems with one. Mine was just getting run in nicely when I had to get rid, I'd done 58,000 miles. The only problem I've ever known is that in some of the earlier higher mileage/abused ones you can get a turbo whistle so listen out for that. danksy
Check the engine hasn't been "chipped" by less than reputable companies, also check that the clutch doesn't slip, and that there isn't too much smoke under hard acceleration. Ensure that you have full service and that cambelt changes are prooven in the service book! Apart from that they are pretty bomb proof.
