batty
Can anyone give me the details of the new transmission for the new A4 and A5. I read that the front wheels are now further forward compared to the engine, and am interested to see how it has been done. Many thanks
Golfer
Chassis change simple as that. New format of A5 A4 A6 and A7 if we ever see it.
batty
the characteristic of any audi with in-line engine, is that the axle-line of the front wheels has to be well rearward of the engine block - since the driveshafts to the front wheels are connected to the gearbox rear of the clutch. This means that the weight of the engine is well forward. I'm interested in seeing how audi have improved the arrangement, and so put more weight to the rear of the car (BMW-style). This has got to improve the front-heavy feel of some audis.
J_C
As I understand it, the differential has changed places with the clutch (or torque converter), making it possible to move the front axle forward (by about 16cm I think). They've changed the positioning of the steering rack too, IIRC.
batty
this was from the initial launch - would be interested in seeing the layout in detail "Overall, the front axle is located a long way forward for a longitudinal engine configuration with front- and four-wheel drive. This new vehicle architecture makes it possible to have a long wheelbase with a short front overhang, and to optimise the axle load distribution. These are all additional elements that enhance the supreme handling qualities of the new Audi A5. To accomplish this special design, the engineers used a trick adopted from the Audi A8: the front axle differential is located in front of the clutch." J_C
I remember seeing some cutaway pictures somewhere showing the layout in detail. I'll see if I can find them again.
