BrianFD3S
Having chased a good value 320d for ages - to no avail - I am now looking to buy a 97-98 525 tds (E39). Any thoughts on: fuel economy service costs any other issues? or should I hang in there for a 320d? (E46) ps can these older 525tds be converted to use rapeseed oil successfully? gizze
The 525tds is a really old technology, not that economical and quite lacking in power. I would hold out for a 320d personally, superb all round car.
cruiser647
The 525tds does sound great. I had 2 in Vx Omegas. They 'only' have 135BHP in the Omega, and maybe 140 odd in the BMW. Defo no ball of fire. Economy? One was great (35+, auto, CD model) and the other was less than 20mpg (auto, Elite model)! Don't know why, but only had it for 1 month. The engine can be chipped to 160 odd. The same enigne is fitted to some Range Rovers, Disco TD5, Vx Omega and Land Rovers. Very easy to work on, but as Gizze said, old technology and not too frugal compared. You might be able to find a relatively good 525 or 530d if you need the space. Much improved engine.
