Guys,

Got a somewhat scary sounding groaning noise coming from the front of the car.

It's almost like someone's mortally wounded a cow /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Seems to come from inside the bulkhead when you're in the car or over engine when it does it. I've almost 100% convinced myself it's not the steering rack or pump as it does it when straight and if you turn the engine off and bounce the car it will still do creak (albeit quieter, I'm assuming that the extra load on the suspension when moving/turning is to blame).

The amount of noise doesn't change whether you're at no lock half lock or full lock (tested in a friendly car park). It's going into a4audi in a week or so for a proper check, so I'll find out then, but in the meantime, anyone had a similar issue?

It's got 120K, so I suspect bushes control arms as I had the C-shaped link brackets changed about 10k ago on the driver and 20k ago on the passenger sides.

Also, it's usually OK from cold, gets worse as the car is driven for a bit.

Bushes on suspension.... its nothing dangerous, just annoying. It's unlikely to be steering rack related. Any noise on the suspension will travel through and sound like its come from the bulkhead.

120K is about the time, and the heat of the engine is what normally makes them stiffen up just a bit more and start squeaking, hence they are ok when cold.

Its nothing fatal, but finding out which bush is at fault is usually very difficult. Be prepared to change them all if you 100% want rid of the noise. Its the most cost effective method if you have the suspension apart anyway...

Thought it was, Andy @ A4Audi reckoned so over the phone too, but was concerned that it's really loud and came on suddenly.

Bloody typical though, it's a relatively expensive service at 120k too.

Ah, the joys of owning a 'classic executive' car /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Apart from sounding like I drive a dying cow, it's still an awesome bit of kit.

I get a groaning occassionaly when going slow. I've isolated that down to th epads (which are getting down a bit). Go faster and problem gone (which is myway of fixing it for the moment!/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif)

Thing is the sound is VERY loud at times - enough for people to turn and look...

Pads are on my list, but not for the 'scary' noise.. Not sure if it's the fronts (discs & pads replaced a few months ago) or the rears (pads over a year ago & discs god knows how long) that squeal like a stuck pig /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
