faidilah
Autocar reckons the Scirocco will make life very hard for the GTI.. A GTI and then some for very little extra... interested to hear if anyone planning on a change. I'm keen to take a look when it arrives
chriswastle
Well the way i see it is . Yes the scirocco may handle better and be better looking, but thats it ! A vast majority of Golf GTI owners buy it because its such a good all rounder. I couldnt live with the scirocco i and know others couldnt either.............. Tarmac_Terrorist
I think the Scirocco is a great looking car and will no doubt steal some sales from the GTI. As already mentioned, many folks buy the GTI as it's a smart, nippy practical 4 seater. I have 2 little ones and need the rear / boot space so unfortunately the Scirocco will have to remain eye candy. I suspect that 60% of all GTI sales are 5 door models - this providing a clue to those who require a hatch as opposed to a coupe perhaps? I'm a bit disappointed that early suggestions point to the fact that the Scirocco will have the standard GTi 197bhp unit. I would have expected the 230bhp unit to be fitted from the start. If this is the case then I strongly suspect that the future MKVI GTI will also have the same 197bhp unit initially. Maybe VW want to be seen to be intoducing an economical performance car for the all important initial launch reviews which often set the scene to the models future success. It's only car fans such as us who chew over the finer nuts 'n' bolts!
RedRobin
....I only like the Scirocco viewed from certain angles and it looks sh!t in white. Three-quarter rear looks horrific imo - Squeezed out of a toothpaste tube! And the front looks like Monsieur Renault has been getting his leg over Madamoiselle Peugeot. I've no doubt that the mechanicals and performance will be excellent but it's utterly useless as a practical allrounder. As T_T suggests, it's only the 3-door GTI boys who may be interested. If I wanted a 2-door, I'd go for another BMW or a previously owned Porsche, one owner (great deals on those!) and do it properly.

Mouse
I think the new Rocco is slightly lighter than the GTI, correct me if I'm wrong. I find it looks horrible and stunning at the same time, if that makes sense. Overall its growing on me and I'd definately consider one in the future (although I'd rather have a Mk1 ;-))
BLOCK
I think people will like the scirocco when its finaly on the street, because if i remember rightly no one was keen on the mk5 golf untill all the magazines started raving about them and people started seeing them on the roads, there not exactly photogenic either. So im reserving judgement till i see one in the flesh, and half expecting to have one next. block
Snoopy
Its not bland enough or euro boxy enough for GTI owners.
RedRobin
Its not bland enough or euro boxy enough for GTI owners. ....Quite the contrary! The new Scirocco doesn't look visually exciting enough. IMO

RedRobin
BLOCK - I think that pic you posted is the best view of it. It doesn't show how it suddenly changes shape towards the rear.

CarMad
Poorbarr can you sort your avatar please its huge. On the Scirocco I think it will be a grower for many, I didn't like it when I first saw it but its slowly growing on me. If it drives better than a GTI then I think it could be a bit of hit.
