Im confused about the Prius!

What other large family hatcback can you get NEW for £17,782 that emits only 104g/KM C02.

Does 56 Urban MPG, 67 X-Urban MPG, Combined 65.7 MPG.

Includes automatic trans (at that price).

Has 145 BHP with tonnes of torque instantly avalible?

TBH if it was cheaper i would have purchased and saved myself the London CC!

I would not buy the Prius unless all my driving was in the city. In all other cercumstances a BMW 118d whops it cost-per-mile and it's CC exempt as it's under 125 Co2.

The Prisumtous is the marketing equivalent of an energy saving light bulb you buy in Homebase. Look at one of them and they say "20w", but if you look at the current they take it's 160mA, therefore it's actual total power-station load is 38.4w... Just another "green" bu11sh1t tactic to pretend not to screw the environemt and get more money out of you.

A collegue wanted an economical car and was looking at a Prius, but we worked out a 1.9TDi Golf Plus was cheap total of ownership.

Rant over, I'm off to fill up with VPower..... again....

As long as you do not buy it on environmental concerns. It's full of batteries, so producing them is bad for the environment, and re-processing them to make them safe for disposal is another environmental nightmare.

Anyway - do you ever buy those MPG figures? They are only a very high estimation 'guide' based on a petrol car. Nothing 'real world' about them.

....Sure, but it's zero fun (says he who has been in one but never driven one and would do so out of curiosity but would immediately get rid of it even if it was a free gift! - I'm not prejudiced!)

Not what driving enjoyment is all about for me - Not even if it arrives at a destination shortly after I do and costs less doing so. It certainly doesn't save the planet by its existence.

The published mpg figures are very subjective, like all mpg figures... but I followed a silvery-blue onehome last night, in the fast/outside lane at 'average' speeds........ I bet he wasn't getting much better than I was.

I think Prius driver's aren't c0cks, fannys or a$$holes.... they are sheep.

Oh ok.

TBH i couldent price up anything that was remotely close from any other brand that on paper was close. Not by the time you add in Autotrans, the size of the boot, decent access to doors etc.

The 118d MAN was 19,060 on the road and in Auto its not exempt from from CC to thats an extra cost £1800 per yr.

I did read about those battery issues!

There was an interesting thing on Fifth Gear (for once) this week. Jarno Trulli and Tiff Needell took turns to drive a Prius around a predetermined route that included a mix of urban and rural roads. They achieved 60.something and 61.something mpg respectively - which was better than I expected.

If you live in London and look at the Prius purely in terms of emissions and congestion charge savings, it makes excellent sense and is probably one of the most economical decent sized cars there is on urban roads - assuming you don't drive like a complete tool.

But if half or more of your driving is on open roads, you'll be better off with a 118/318d (or any number of other smallish diesels).

Of course, if you begin to factor in the true environmental impact - including manufacture, transportation of parts and disposal - then the picture begins to change.

....I saw that prog too - Didn't Jarno look totally bored! Nothing personal, garcon, but I'm looking for the  smilie.

....The "true environmental impact" says it all. I find it irritating that Toyota have pulled the wool over so many sheep's eyes!

 Will that do?

Fifth Gear are so diabolically crap at doing all the normal stuff that just the fact that this was a bit different (and even faintly useful) held my interest a bit more.

My Subaru dealer was telling me how some woman had been in the day before asking "What's your lowest emission car?" He showed her a 3 cylinder 1 litre Subaru Justy shoe-box but she didn't seem impressed. So he said, "If you REALLY want to help the environment rather than just follow the latest fad, what you ought to do is keep the car you've got until it falls apart."

I don't think she'll be back. :roflmao:

Jezza said a very important thing along the same lines on Top Gear... if you want a more economical car, don't change the one you have, just drive it more carefully.

Going back to a V8 has changed how I drive. In the 535d I just drove with no care to fuel economy, tyres, etc... and got on average 31.x mpg. Now I drive more thoughtfully trying not to hoof it unnessaseraly and to be honest I'm not driving THAT much slower, just uing the right and middle pedal less.

If you drive a 118d/320d/Golf TDi how Tiff & Potato did, you'd get incredible results too.

Just stop bleeting and buy the car you want... :)

Just to add one more thing to the things that make a Prius awful apart from the massive environmental impact of it's manufacture and disposal, similar day to day running costs to a good normal car and the fact that some owners read the Guardian, eat tofu, have beards and work in MEEDYAA. If it works economically for you great but who has not wanted to throttle someone when they babble on about the environmental impact of cars without realising that our rampant consumerism and need to replace cars every two to three years is an issue that is more relevant than the 10-20% difference in the fuel consumption of my car vs. theirs?

Depreciation is awful on any new car and one that has to have it's batteries replaced in ten years or so is liable to be worse surely? My wife is an average motorist and demanded a new car. Even on the little hatch we got for her it was £4500/45% in two and a half years. That's why I'm allowed the A8, even if I just run it for a year and then set fire to it, we break even. Hence the monkeys and maths comment. As I am a hypocrite by nature I of course do not apply that to owners of porsches etc. If they can afford to run them as resources dwindle and become more expensive then great, it's their reward for working hard or having a rich dad. I mustn't let my envy turn me into a socialist. I'll just overtake them on the bike.

Yours, off to paint the car pink and write cock down the side,

Bill

Robin, talking of car/owner stereotypes, is it true that the GTi badge is actually a anagram for the driver inside?

  • 4 weeks later...
Audis are getting it in the neck because they are stupid looking cars with only the R8 the saving grace. Plus Audi owners are indeed cocks too.

Thank god, somebody here seemingly more generally offensive and troll like than my self :roflmao:.

Would it be bad form to counter this with some well crafted misogyny? [northumbrian accent]Woorr, birds like, mun. Kitchen, bedroom, waayeeeyh mun.[/northumbrian accent]

I dated a Julie once, she was lovely, smarter than me with a great taste in bikes. She didn't own a Prius, I bet this one does.

Must not feed troll further, must not feed troll, must not feed troll......
