Any news on the MkVI GTI?

1,527 posts in this topic

Have there been any issues with the current 2.0T FSI engine which have caused this redesign? Or, are the changes to improve power output / emissions?

You just got to question why the developments so soon when this engine has won awards in very recent years.

....Apart from the tinkering which Snoopy refers to, the Mk6 generation changes will be largely due to pressures on car manufacturers to further reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

Aah, fuel consumption & emissions - nothing important then. +++

Quote from this weeks Auto Express: The launch of a new Golf means a new GTI - and Auto Express has seen it! VW gave us a preview, and the car applies a similar approach to the Mkv with a subtle bodykit, red piping around the grille and tartan seats. However, the car will have a 1.8 turbo TFSI with "no less than 200PS", an insider told us.

Interesting developments as i was thinking about the S3 Sportback as my next car,but if above is true then i would have to see how the R version GTi compares.

I really hope that Vw go with this as i am sure it would appeal to many current GTi owners myself included.

Hope you managed a good deal on the S3 Sportback are you selling your GTi privately..+++

Indeed, I would definitely consider the R version myself next time.

The deal for the S3 didn't bother me too much as it's a company car, but we got 7% off.

We buy and sell most of our cars through a consultancy, who do all the hard work with the dealers for us and sell to private buyers for us.

I already posted that!

Well, most of it. :P

....I would take anything that the motoring mags say with a pinch of salt at this stage. Until VW release an official press release it's all speculative.

Slightly disappointed to see that the new Golf will have white backlit dials instead of the blue and no side rubbing strips - the latter seem to be 'form above functionality' Perhaps, not like VW is it?

The MKV R32 has white backlit dials with blue needles and I think they look good.

Really like the circular fuel / water temp gauges +++

Latest on the Mk6 GTI :

"Power will come from a 211bhp turbocharged 2.0-litre version of the group’s new global EA888 engine, equipped with the new valve-lift system developed by Audi.

Volkswagen is keen to make maintenance easier, and access to the turbo and oil cooler will be improved in a bid to cut servicing costs.

The VW GTI will get beefed-up looks too. It will have new bumpers front and rear, as well as different head and tail-lights. The headlights will have Audi-style LED running lights. Five-spoke 18in alloys will be standard, with 19in items on the options list.

The bad news for six-cylinder Golf fans is that there are no plans to replace the current R32 version, mainly because of EU emissions legislation.

Instead, VW plans to launch a four-wheel-drive R variant with a 265bhp version of the GTI engine."

....Sounds really tasty!! Oh dear! I'm still committed to keeping my very heavily modified Mk5 GTI for more years.

Taken from the What Car website - On the GTI;

"We've already seen it, and while it is relatively understated alongside some hot hatches, it is still easy to identify thanks to a honeycomb lower grille with Audi R8-like side strakes, LED lamps on the lower edge of the light clusters, a subtle rear diffuser and side skirts, and a roof-top spoiler."

I'm drooling at the thought

Like you, RR,I'm committed to my MKV as I adore it, but with features such as these, how can I resist...

....My best plan would be to wait to see what the R-version GTI is like with reported 265 bhp and AWD which will follow later. So, roughly 2-3 years from now and if I love it, get a red one and transfer my plate, selling mine privately to an enthusiast as modded but well maintained etc - Only Stage1 and never tracked. Special VWR Quaife diff, AP BBK, etc etc.

....I've already had a "bags first dibs" on buying my existing GTI from a VDub enthusiast friend who knows my car!

It'll have to be pretty good to get me to part with mine - She's just so perfectly balanced now with the mods and that's without the Quaife!

....Auto Express: ....1.8 turbo TFSI...

lol and that source was talking ~240PS from the first iteration prototype lol. I took this with a large pinch of salt though.

Robin like yourself the mk5 will be staying with us. Its going nowere.

But we are a two car family so a nice mk6 to join the mk5 would be nice but it all depends on many factors. We may end up just getting another mk5 at this rate as im too picky lol.

Thanks guys for collecting other info from other sites

The more info we get the more we will be able to workout what it maybe like.

but the interior does look very nice!

I can see me wanting the mkvi GTI at this rate but I will be hanging on to my GTI for a good few years yet. It's all too easy to become excited and want 'the latest thing'. :)

....The latest computer, the latest car, the latest camera, the latest mobile, the latest pretty girl you met, the list goes on!

That basic Mk6 Golf does very little for me too, as does the basic Mk5.

Does the current basic model do anything for you? Be honest now...

....I can honestly say that the car in the pic does absolutely nothing for me. I think that the basic Mk6 is an improvement on the basic Mk5 but neither excite me. I always have been a sucker for eye-candy on both four wheels and two legs.

Within days of the new VW Golf VI media release, talk about the sporty GTI version is already emanating. According to VW insiders who spoke with Autocar, the Golf GTI will get 11hp more for a total of 211hp. Increase in power is a result of VW's new global 2.0-liter turbo EA888 engine, which is equipped with Audi's new variable valve-lift system. VW also made access to the turbo and oil cooler easier, therefore, keeping service times/costs down.

The GTI will also look the part with more distinctive body kit, taillights, 18 and 19-inch wheels and headlights with Audi-style LED daytime driving lights.

Unfortunately, the R32 and its sonic V6 engine are being dropped due to EU emissions legislation. However, VW will, in spirit, bring it back via an all-wheel-drive R variant called GTI-R. It will be powered by the 265hp 2.0 TFSI found in the Audi S3.

The new GTI is expected to tease enthusiasts in concept form this October in Paris. Market launch will be spring 2009.

In the grand scheme of automobile pron, I realise the current GTI doesn't exactly snap knicker elastic from 30 yards. However, if the MKVI looks like those pictures, it would frighten away even the ginger fatties ! :P:grin:
