Hello all,

After over 3 years of ownership I think its time to give my 05 GTi DSG a little freshen up. To be honest after a few years of Audi ownership I've not been overly impressed with VW build qualitly after a string of annoying little problems ( dreaded worming on my 18" Monza's, small cooling fan, dash freeze and now a knocking sound under breaking) but due to the current drop in 2nd hand prices I've decided to stick with for now.

So I'm looking for a power increase, which is usable, not too agressive and will get me loving the GTi again. I have got pretty much every re-map company added to my favorites and have all the figures and prices, What I need from you good folks is the user feedback as to how each re-map really drives, the pro's and con's (PM me if you want to keep it hush hush) so I can go and get it done!

I'm hoping that the forum spirit is still strong enough for honesty and will work as designed to help me make the right choice.

Thanks in advance,

ES

You're not alone - precisely the same car and age with exactly the same thoughts... !

I've been running Revo stage 1 software since November 2007 and can honestly say that the car is nothing short of brilliance to drive. The power delivery is full on from 2500 revs + and I've had no problems (touch wood) since I've had the remap, or indeed the car for that matter. I cannot fault the real life driving experience with the Revo remap. I believe all tuners to be pretty much the same and some say that Revo is "agressive". Hell, at the end of the day what power increase won't be "agressive" compared to the standard car? Personally, I like the pretty much instant low-down power delivery, full-on power throughout the rev range until the top-end that the Revo remap provides - that's exactly what I wanted. Revo will give you a 4 hour free-trial and I think APR (Awesome GTI Store UK - VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda Performance & Styling) are giving 6 at present. I happened to go for Revo because of the free trial and my nearest tuner in Aberdeen and Glasgow offered it. The only other nearest tuner offered GIAC software, but there was more information available on forums such as TSN to convince me to go with the Revo remap. Try them all out, but one things for sure, you'll not regret having it done. Miles of smiles afterwards and forever more +++

....Revo, APR, Superchips, are all well established and similar but Revo are specialist in VAG tuning and probably do much more development than the others. Also their aftersales service is excellent and gives good peace of mind. They ain't the cheapest though.

If you have DSG, it's very important not to take the torque much more than 300 ft lb / 400 Nm.

Here's a recent plot of my Stage1 - Smooth and healthy curves delivering driveability : -

Robin you might want to revise that photo - it's got your name and your reg on it. OK, so everyone knows your reg and you don't care, but there's some muppets on t'Internet who can find out where you live from your reg no. Now they've got your name, you're open to ID theft.

Interesting to see that RR, the max output was a little lower that I was expecting especially as you've got the full miltek, air intake etc. Thought it might be about 10 bhp higher.

However it's also good news as my insurance company bracket you with a % increase in power, upto 20% has only a small increase in premium, more than that and they really hit you. This would slip me in under the 20% mark.

In December I saw 244 bhp on the same Dyno-Dynamics rollers at JKM. My curves and rev range is good though and that's what matters more to me. Also my Air-Fuel plot is "perfect" apparently.

Come along to the rolling-road meet at JKM in early October - A bunch of us from GolfGTI.co.uk forum are there to compare plots with some other rollers on the same GTI's.

A dyno operator could make a graph read virtually anything you like. If you just happened to have one that fitted within the 20% mark and declared that then I think you'd cover yourself should they ever query it. Of course the bhp may increase over time due to the engine loosening up etc so if they ever (highly highly unlikely) ever tested it then it could be simply down to that and I don't think they could punish you for that. It would only be a handful of percent anyway.

Of course doing such a thing deliberately to mislead an insurer etc would be fraudulent and I certainly wouldn't advocate doing so.

I have absolutely no interest in being misleading with my insurer but if I can get it chipped and still keep the insurance 'sensible' then that would be good.

RR - How much are they charging to rolling road the cars on that day? I could be interested... If the bank manager will loosen the purse strings ;)
