skifly
my 2000 1.8T Gti has decided it will get itself in a bit of a pickle at the moment and is juddering badly through the power band. It is basically as if it splutters for a second then keeps going and happens through the rev range. It can do this from never through a gear or so much you need to back off / change etc to another gear to keep moving. Have noticed that it seems marginally better when driven higher in the rev range and can often be eased by simply restarting the car, however doesnt get rid of the problem. Any thoughts appreciated!! Mook
That's definitely a candidate for a fooked coil pack. I run the same engine in my track toy and I've had almost exactly the same symptoms as you describe. Eventually, it'll fail completely and you'll be running on 3 cylinders. If you've got access to a Ross-Tech VAG-COM (a.k.a. VCDS) then the fault report should tell you which coil pack it is. Alternatively, call into your local VW specialist and they'll be able to sort it for you. HTH

skifly
Hmmm... after further investigation today (i turned radio down) there is a clicking sound or possibly something that sounds like sparking by the drivers right knee by the lights / ignition / fusebox area. I thought it was my keys at first, but i noticed it was usually at the same time as the car dies a little. Does this ring any bells with anyone as am not going to be able to get it in for another 100 km to be vag-com checked. (btw am in NZ) Cheers
Mook
It's probably one of the relays that's clicking, esp if it's in that area. It may or may not be associated with the problem. Oh, and don't worry about being in NZ - we won't hold that against you
skifly
the trauma continues... This morning the poor thing decided it had had enough of my girlfriend driving it and decided to conk out at a junction and not restart. Seemed the battery was low and couldnt crank the car. I guess that means the alternator was on it way out too and could have been why the car was juddering as the electrics were not getting the juice they needed! Does this sound sensible to anyone or have i just got a lemon with fecked alternator, coil packs, maf and driver? Ayways - its in at a stealers at the moment. Oh and GF mentioned she left her clothes / underwear etc for tonight on the back seat (we are off out) so looks nice and dodgy too! Doh!
Mook
Well she can leave her knickers in the car - she won't be needing them later If the battery's dead, it doesn't always mean the alternator is fecked. If it's been used for lots of short journeys, a battery can last as little as a year.
shark_90
Could be worth checking the engine earth(s) are properly connected and corrosion free. If you are hearing relays clicking away and the car is stuttering, it could well be because you are drawing more current and causing the connection to arc. Or something. skifly
well i tried, but after being in the pit for the arctic monkeys and the boiler room for Prodigy I felt she could keep them on! Will def check the earthing and have also been checking out a possible leak through the pollen filter as they had smashed the plastic tray to pieces last time they changed it. Tarmac_Terrorist
I'm no expert but i'm not convinced a knackered alternator / batter would cause an issue quite to this extent. I seem to recall you recently buying this car just before Xmas from a dealer? Is is covered under warranty for the garage to investigate?
skifly
I'm no expert but i'm not convinced a knackered alternator / batter would cause an issue quite to this extent.I seem to recall you recently buying this car just before Xmas from a dealer? Is is covered under warranty for the garage to investigate? Well it seems you were right!! After getting the car back it died again - this time the fuel pump relay was changed!! Seems this was causing the stuttering!! I then got it back on friday afternoon and drive a few hours north... and it died again and wouldnt restart. Seems the alternator (the new one the garage fitted) was not charging the battery at all!! Cue the feckers being told i was coming after them with a hatchet if they didnt get a car or a mechanic up to me the next day as I was out diving all day, then (its a long weekend over here) was due to head off up to the north end of NZ and away from most of civilisation as we know it!! So... they gave me a suzuki swift!!! To$$ers! Oh and there was no warranty... but the dealer is not doing too badly at the moment (apart doing a good job of opening my wallet!).
