vanduara37
Can anyone post any info how to remove glow plugs from 2005 A4 2.0 Tdi Thanks
BW2309
On the 2.0TDi they are under tha cam cover. You remove the cam cover and they are sat next to the PD units. They have a small sound, black plug on them. Just pop the plug off and they unscrew out. Bit of advice.... get the engine really hot before you start to remove the cover. This heat in the engine helps the glow plugs come loose. They do snap off so any help is good!!! I work on these regularly and have never had to swap a glow plug though, what's up with em? benjie
I would doubt it's all of the glow plugs, more like the wiring. Also, in these temperatures, the car won't use the glow plugs to start anyway, so you won't nitice a problem until winter. Check the wiring. PetrolDave
Is there a fuse that supplies the glow plugs? I think there might be a big fuse somewhere near the battery that supplies the glow plugs. Agree that it's very unlikely all 4 glow plugs will have failed and it's more likely to be something common. BW2309
Has the car had an in'line tuning box fitted??? The glow plug supply and control feed is from the large rotary plug on the rear of the cylinder head. Check that it is fully locked in and not making a poor connection. If a tuning box had been fitted then this would have been disturbed in fitting or removal. If you want to check that they are plugged in correctly, you can remove the cam cover very easily. Just undo the Torx bolts and it'll come straight off, you dont even have to remove the cam belt cover. You can then see the glow plugs next to the base of the injectors. I'll have a look on the wiring diagrams to check the feeds for you and report back! p.s HAVE YOUR OIL PRESSURE CHECKED! I have done a load of BLB engined 2.0TDi's recently that have lost drive to the oil pump!!!!! Check before you incur damage. It is a big problem and doesn't show as a fault until it's too late and something has broken!
vanduara37
Nothing has been done to the car" totally standard" just ran a random scan as the car was "missing" quite badly when flooring the accellerator but turned out to be a blocked EGR valve (fine now). BW2309
Just checked the wiring diagrams. Your glow plugs are fed solely from J179 (glow plug control unit) and this is fed from fuse S39 - this is an 80A strip type fuse on the main vehicle fuse box and is connecting ends of a 6mm RED wire. This could cause a loss of power to all 4, failing that then I'd suggest wiring for all 4 plugs inside the head. Easy engough to check both issues. PM me if you need me to send you copy of diagrams or Elsa info to check either. ANd seriously, please get ya oil pressure checked. I have some pics that would scare you! BW2309
You'll prob have to pop it to a garage (a knowledgable one) but you can check it with a guage at the oil pressure switch. Whilst checking, the technician needs to listen for nasty rattle nosies from the oil pump drive or the chain drive tensioner for the balance shaft unit.
