Magic_Wond
Hi, I have a '97 4.2V8 and it is experiencing all the auto gearbox problems as described in other threads on Tyresmoke as well as the AudiPages.com tech bulletin "Automatic Transmission Noise & Troubleshooting". Last week things deteriorated further - all the gear indicator lights are now on and the car goes into limp home mode every time it changes from 2nd to 3rd. The tech bulletin recommends changing the transmission oil and filter ASAP, however I've been told by my local Audi dealership and also a auto transmission specialist that the A8 autobox is a "sealed unit" and only a full strip down and rebuild fix it. Is changing the transmission oil & filter therefore the kind of job my local independent garage could do? Is the oil flush & filter change easy to do (assuming the gearbox isn't a sealed unit)? Audi won't touch it and to be honest I'd rather avoid their labour rates any way! Cheers for any advice you can give.
CactusGreen
you saw this right?? audipages A8 Automatic Transmission Servicing Audi say all the boxes are a fill for life....but life is 3 years to them.... Had both my 80 Cab and B5 done now....first by an indi specialist, the second by $tealer...well worth the swap according to the oil analysis i got back on the samples...sorted a squeek and lurch on the cab....the B5 just a little more fluid in it's sprited changes.... Must be the Audi ATF, and it's very temp dependent for fill levels....so VCDS or similar software is a must....
