bigface
I have a small notion in buying the above preferably cab. I was wondering would it be a good buy? I was thinking something around 03 with as many toys as possible and wasnt looking to part with anything other than my 07 r32, or would i be better holding on to what i have. Would be looking for approx running costs if anyone can help thanks MOK
Mook
E46 is a great car and slightly quicker than your R32. Cabs are more expensive, but you can pick up a decent coupe for about 15K these days, maybe not that young though. 23mpg, normal BMW running costs, apart from brakes and tyres being more expensive than most. If you want an all out performance car, don't get a cab, because the scuttle shake and twist is still there, despite BMW doing a lot better than others like Audi and Saab to get rid of it. Andrew
When I mused this very idea (of buying an M3) there were loads of threads in the M forum which go through servicing costs, insurance and a fairly unanimous view that you should go for an extended warranty for as long as you can. As I was coming out of the gym the other week a chap in a (probably just washed) sparkly M3 drove past and I had a huge pang of "jesus, I want one" but I've managed to keep that in check thus far by turning my attention to the feasibility of an RS4 in the next 9-12 months or so! Mook
Tough call between an E46 M3 and an RS4, although the RS4 holds its value a lot better, i.e. they're more expensive - £30k for a decent example, although they can be had for £25k
Andrew
Better looking IMHO (although the CS runs it awfully close in my book), 4 doors, bit more modern, don't see as many, V8 sound but as you say, quite a bit more expensive. All conjecture at the moment. P.S. I'll be sure to PM you nearer the time about where to find good examples - you seem to be in the know. Or I'll ask you at the BBQ. Mook
I've struck you off my BBQ list for wasting my time getting the BBQ out and you never pitching up
Torino101
E46 is a great car and slightly quicker than your R32. Is it really only slightly quicker in real life?? Never driven either, but by stats i'd expect the BM to feel significantly faster: M3 - 1495kg / 338bhp - 226bhp/tonne Rear Wheel Drive R32 - 1510kg / 246bhp - 162bhp/tonne 4wd(more power drained)
Mook
In real life on the road, yes, only slightly quicker. On track, no - the M3 handles soooo much better. I'm also comparing a standard M3 with a standard R32

Tipex
Yes, but 'preferably' doesn't mean only, and I felt that car was good enough, and cheap enough that it may be tempting. So there.

bigface
Well i drove the e46 before it felt a lot quicker and i had a run in with a mate who had a cab m3 and lets just say he passed me easily enough though i had a few in the car. Depends on what i can get for the R
Torino101
I also don't think that's particularly cheap..... There are plenty of circa 35,000 mile '03 cars on Auto Trader for £13,000 which for the ~£1,500 price differential I think is definitely worth it. JonC
£25k for a RS4, Mook? Really? I've been looking and I haven't seen one for less than £30k. Where have you seen them for that money? Edited June 19, 2009 by JonC
Andrew
Jon, look on Autotrader and Pistonheads - examples on both sub 30k.
JonC
I thought 2nd hand prices were climbing, albeit minimally? It was only 2/3 months ago when I saw RS4's at £30k +.....?

JonC
Food for thought mate? Auto Trader UK - AUDI RS4 RS 4 Quattro 4dr SAT/NAV+HUGE SPEC Some food for though that is! Quite some way under £30k, too. Wonder if prices will drop further? Want one, but would probably go for the Avant
