Engine cut out at speed - ideas?

my 1998 4.2 Q cut out several times at the weekend. I was on a motorway doing a steady 70, and the engine just died. All electrics seemed fine, and I could restart the engine immediately.

It happened again a few minutes later, and then was fine for another few hours.

Has any one had something similar happen? Any ideas to what caused it?

thanks

Iain

I'd agree the fuel pump would be the main suspect.

Get the vehicle on VAG Com and see what errors it throws up.

The pump is buried in the tank and accessable through the boot floor. Search on here for lots more on Fuel Pumps and how to.

If it turns out to be the pump and you intend to do the work yourself please remember you will be working with extremly volatile fuel - this is the one time I make sure the battery is disconnected.....
