High mileage on a golf?

I'm looking at buying a mark 5 golf gti with 70 on the clock. I've seen another with 60k on but I really like the one with 70k as it has a few sensible mods and I prefer the colour. I'm concerned as I would have like a low mileage one but general consensus of opinion seems to be that 70 isnt a problem on a vdub. I've just sold my evo so have been in a world where anything about 50k is frowned upon.

What do others think on the mileage?

Welcome to Tyresmoke +++

Golfs are good for well over 200k, so I wouldn't worry about 100k, let alone 70k. Make sure it's got a full history.

Oh, and they don't need servicing every 43 miles like Evos ;)

Hear hear!!!

My Bora TDi has 180K in the clock - Y reg and for the last 3+ years, I've stuck 30K a year on it.

Seems to take it in it's stride. +++

Welcome to Tyresmoke, 108!

Mine is now on 74k (4 years old) and runs sweet as a nut. As Mook says, choose one with a full history which shows it has been regularly serviced and maintained by an owner who loves it [Mine's NOT for sale!].

Btw, you asked me for pics of mine so here's a new one. Best to PM me rather than the other kind of message.

Hi guys, I've got a mark 4 Golf 1.8 GTI, its done 125K and seems to Rev high in 5th. Basically at 80MPH its reving at 4000 and by a tonne its knocking on for 5000. Other than this it runs nicely does anyone have any idea what might be wrong with it? Or is this just because its 10 years old>? Also I was thinking about getting it chipped is this worth doing or will it kill off an old enginer?

Cheers for that TT.

Back on topic, if you're thinking of getting such a high milage GTi then I strongly suggest you have the high pressure fuel pump cam follower and the cam lobe it's driven off of looked at for abnormal wear as this is a weak point of these engines even if not modified

If the cam follower is badly worn, it can also damage the driving cam lobe leading to a very expensive repair bill as the car is unlikely to be covered under warranty.

Out of interest, anyone know how many miles you can expect to get out of a clutch on a 1.8t 180bhp MK4? Mine sees a lot of town driving - mainly sensible driving (low-rev starts / early changes) and quite regularly, a good healthy booting. It's still on the original clutch at 70k - do reckon it should see 100k? For a bonus point, does anyone know how much a new clutch would be a VW dealer?

I did loads of mixed driving in my A4 1.8T and that saw over 180k on the orignal clutch.

Don't get a main dealer to do the work if you need it changed - ask your local independent VW specialist to do the work - use OEM parts if it's under warranty and you'll be fine.
