BMW messing me around?

 I should have..

They rang in the afternoon and said it is fine but they want to wait until it is dark to test the lights  why can't they just switch them on in the day!? Anyway, I was real busy at work so just accepted that. They said they are going to ask BMW for help on the issue tomorrow as they spent all day trying to work it out. I think I might ask them to put me in an equivalent car tomorrow, this new one hasn't even got climate or rear reading lights and mines pretty loaded.

Singh,

This sounds like a bit of a nightmare, I currently work in BMW Sales but have also been a service advisor for 5 years,

With ref to the light sensor it is true that it works from UV light, and not the same as our eyes see, this is how sometimes the lights can be running through the day, the option is to adjust the sensor which should help, this wouldn't really be a warranty item as it isn't really a defect, however the price you have been quoted does seem pretty steep!!

As for the headlights, due to atmospheric conditions and due to the fact they are not a sealed unit it is possible to see slight condensation in the lamps, if this goes away with the lights on then it is not considered an issue, however if there is clear water droplets on the lens or the issue does not clear with the lights on then it should be taken as a warranty item.

So the initial conversation with the service advisor when they said it was normal, I can relate to what they said, however It is pretty obvious relating to the condensation its is slightly worse than they thought and should have been taken care of straight away.

As for the what has happened next sounds like a shambles I'm afraid, its very hard work being a service advisor as they are between the technician and the customer and its difficult to please both, In my opinion with something like the lights failing I certainly would not release the car until we knew we had fixed the problem, its worth just pushing them to sort it, even if its not in your nature.

I hope you manage to get your issues sorted, having worked for BMW for over 10 years it annoys the hell out of my hearing about other dealers poor efforts to resolve problems, at the end of the day, you guys keep us in a job by buying the cars.

Cheers Gav

Hi, thanks for your response Gav, I can certainly sympathise with the situation of the service advisor, I think its a little embarrassing for her when its not really her fault and she is doing her job. I'm still not really annoyed with BMW. They are trying to fix the problem and did call to ask if the courtesy car was adequate etc... They said they have replaced the whole control unit on the lights with a brand new one now and will be ready to collect tomorrow. +++

I have to say it sounds like the "quality" of the technician is at fault here.

My dealership technicians are very very good, and IMO would have this sorted by now without you having to return only to pick it up the first time. Once this is done go somewhere else for your BMW services.

A lot of people are under the assumption that when they go to the dealer they have the best techs working on their pride and joy, but I was speaking to a 17 year old apprentice technician the other day that had just done an Inspection 2 and rear disc and pad change on an M3! I know Audi only let the master techs touch the A8/S8s. At least thats what they tell me... They said they road tested it now and its fine, so will collect it tomorrow.

If he's conscientious and reliable, does it matter if he's only 17?

Changing the oil/filter on an M3 is no more complicated or specialised than changing it on any BMW?

What better way to to encourage young people into the job, than letting them get there hands grubby on their dream cars, gives them excellent bragging rights, and encourages them to come to work on time!!
