Hi! Welcome to TSN!

How old an A6 are you after?

Get a quattro version! Utterly genius in the snow (fun too)!

We have lots of advice and A6 owners on here. I am on my 4th (if you include my Audi 100).

Thanks,I`m looking at a 1999-2001 just got to get xmas out the way then start looking in ernist, just out of interest which is the best the 2.4 or 2.8?

I had the V6 2.8 quattro Avant tip, and it was OK. It was a cruiser car rather than a mover.

The 2.4 will drink jsut the same (or more) and give you no benefit, so ignore it.

I have just got a 2.7T A6 Avant tip quattro and it's a bit of a mover! (detuned S4 engine)

If you can get the V6 3.0 do so, the 2.8 is a bit slow. The 2.7T is good if you can find a good one. Avants hold their price for longer are easier to sell and IMO look better.

Don't worry about the miles, BUT if they are high (over 150K) check the front suspension for noises AND the cam cover gaskets will probably need changing. Maybe even the variable cam gaskets too (about 2 hours each side as the cams have to come out). Other than that, the engines usually fine with Service History. These cars can easily take the miles. My old one had 184K before it was written off in an accident, and one I've replaced it with has also got 185K miles!

Y reg 2.7T Avant quattro tip (lots of toys) for £2.5K.

Looking on Autotrader, some of the 2.8's are just so over priced! Be careful.

Hope that helps - I'll post pictures of mine one day when it's clean. :o

Thankyou so much for your help it really is very helpful and well recieved.

I agree that there are some on autotrader but like you say a bit pricey for the year/mileage,I did think about the 2.7 Bi turbo that is on there.

  • 3 weeks later...
Looks like a manual to me, even though it says auto.............

150K miles is OK - looks good though. BUT the price is a bit 'cheap'. Be careful with it if you go to see it.

This too:- Used AUDI A6 Estate 3.0L Car for Sale - Auto Trader UK

or

Used AUDI A6 Estate 2.7L Car for Sale - Auto Trader UK

?

Thanks for that,I did see the 02 plate auto one looks very clean maybe have to go and see the 51 plate one just to satisfy my curiosity as two weeks ago it was £3950 and now been dropped twice in price to £3500.

I'd not bother at all with a petrol V6 when the 2.5 V6 TDI is a complete torque monster along with 45mpg potential and is veeery quick.I had a 2.8 V6 some time ago and it drank like Oliver Reed

Get a Quattro version like I did and you feel all smug going up hills others can't climb in this weather weve been having, and its fun too..

Reliability is better too without all that nasty ignition gear to go wrong.

On long journeys I can get nearly 700 miles on a tank of diesel which isnt bad on 4 wheel drive 2.5 V6 motor...

That V6 diesel makes a great sound too +++

However, my mates A6 V6 Tdi Avant quattro manual only gives him 35 - 40 mpg. The can be tuned up to 220BHP on the plus side. Not sure how far the 2.7 V6 Twin Turbo can go.........

My old V6 2.8 tip q and my current 2.7TT A6 both like a drink, but the smoothness and speed of the 2.7TT makes it worthwhile! +++ Only does 10K a year anyway.

Make sure it's had 2 belt changes. Listen out for front suspension rattles over bumps.

Does look a good example! - shame it's got the 4 spoke wheel rather than the sporty 3.

More later!

I think he said its due a service soon,as for the cambelt I will be getting that changed anyway within the first week if I buy it,better safe than sorry as they say. Thanks for advice though +++

Right Im picking the car up tomorrow

********! :P+++

but I still have this niggling in my head about the auto box reliability.Ive been a member on the volvo forums for a couple of years and if the gearbox goes in an auto awd your better of breaking the car, what a dillema :ffs:

Don't worry - get the car, get the cambelt done AND get the gearbox fluid changed - both by a VAG specialist.

I've had 4 & 5 speed autos in all my quattros. Not one iota of grief at all. All range in mileage when bought from 90K to 185K! +++
