Imprezas

Anyone know the differences between the old Imprezas?

I'm talking the classic shape, I'm after a track toy, don't specifically want an Impreza, but it's hard to ignore the performance per pound.

So, whats the different between a WRX, an STi, a Turbo 2000 etc etc, are any of them really any better or is it just a trim level?

Bearing in mind I'd probably be changing brakes and suspension, is any one more powerful than the other?

The 'UK Turbo 2000's' seem cheapest, and seem to come in the nicest colours like Mica Red, where as the others are all a horrid green or not particularly nice dark blue.

WRX and STi were only officially sold in the UK from MkII onwards (the 2001 bug eye model), so all classics with those badges are Jap imports.

That can be bad, because you've far less chance of getting one with a full history, unless it was imported new and has been looked after by a decent specialist. It's worth remembering that back in those days there was an import limit placed on Subaru UK, something which helped feed the grey market. Subaru UK's response to that was to ban their dealers from touching grey imports, so you won't get one with a dealer history.

On the flip side, the UK spec Turbo model was around 210PS then 220PS (1996/7 facelift), whereas the import WRX was around 250 and the STi was 280.

Then there are literally dozens of special editions, both UK model and import.

As a good starting point for a track toy I'd be tempted to stick with a UK car, as standard as possible, and spend your first £££ on seat/harness, suspension and brakes before even thinking about the engine (beyond maybe a single pipe back box). If you do go import look for a clean, unmolested Type RA ... lightweight, stripped out, roof vent and a ridiculously low geared rally 'box (the RA is fundamentally the road version of the Group N/Production class rally car.)

Cool, cheers for that, do all Type RA's have a roof vent? there is one on Ebay with a roll cage already fitted, and supposedly it's an RA but doesn't have the roof vent in the pics?

I thought they did but maybe not. You do have to be careful though of modified cars that are claimed to be models they're not.

Yeah, I think if I end up going for an Impreza i'll get a nice unmolested uk model.

Cheers for the advice!
