02 GT TDI 150pd smoking & overfuelling (heavily)

My golf mk4 02 1.9 TDI 150 PD is badly playing up, it is now overfuelling badly and blowing out loads of white smoke, you can just smell neat diesel?

As well as this it is rough in idle, drives poorly with little or no power, and struggles to start in the mornings (even though it cranks fine, just wont catch and kick in)?

Quick background to the car, initially at 300rpm it intermittently judders and throws out black smoke, changed maf, changed turbo pipes, but no joy. More recently vagcom picked up fault code 16688- intermittent misfire on injector 4, changed it twice with no improvement, replaced with same injector i had originally, then changed round injector 3 (known to be working) with injector 4, still gave the same code, saying injector 4 misfire, also changed injector wiring loom!!!

please help, as i am running out of ideas and money!

that whats next for the mechanic, he is going to check the ecu wiring harness going from the ecu to injectors, then the ecu itself.

A few mechanics have said they need to send the ecu to a specialist to test, but the mechanic i am using said he is going to check it himself, but i know he does not have any specialist ecu testing equipment. so my question is how do you test the ecu???

they are also breakers, so that could be possible, but i got the feeling he meant test as with an ohms/volt meter, as that how he is going to test the ecu harness?

not sure really, will ask him tomorrow, but just wanted some ideas as to how it COULD be done, to see whether it matches up with what he says.

Perhaps he's going to swap it with a known good one and see if the fault goes away?

There must be loads of different variations of ECU part number though, so not sure how he'd have enough of them to try that route?

There are loads, and then you have to have the tools to extract the PINs and code them in, you can't just plug another one in. I think that's the best route though, to be honest.

I don't think I have any PD150 ECUs kicking around but I could probably find one.

being a breaker i assume he would have all the tools.

if you find a working 150 PD ARL, let me know, and how much you would want, also where are you based?

Breakers generally don't get involved in anything like that.

If you find an ECU then I can kill the immobiliser on it so you'll be able to just swap it out and test it. Or if the garage have coding equipment I can read the codes from the ECU to enable you to adapt it into the immobiliser.

If you can get me the part number and software code of your ECU it would be helpful.

UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!

Compression test has been done, and the first three injectors are showing 14-15 psi, but the 4th injector is showing 30 psi, it is spraying neat diesel and as a consequence there is loads of white smoke from the exhaust and a very strong smell of diesel???

the mechanic seems to think there is a crack in the head or the head is gone, stating that either way it looks almost certain i need to replace the head?

any experiences, view or suggestions as to what else could be causing these results from a compression test???
