eustache
Just got back from local tyre man. Had a rumble at 20-40 mph. Turned out to be a rear offside tyre (Pyrelli) which had become uneven on the inside. Tyre had done about 8000 miles. Same thing happened a couple of years ago with original tyre - rear offside tyre again. Tyre man said this is quite common, but I've never had this on any other car. Any thoughts? Cuprabob
It does happen but normally at higher mileages. I've experienced this myself on my last car, a Leon MK1, and I've heard a lot of people with MK2 Leons with the problem, which is basically the same platform as the GTI. Some brands of tyres seem more prone than others as the majority of people I've seen with the problem waas with Goodyear tyres.
DHA
Happened to me on Goodyears as well. I got the tracking done and fitted Michelins and problem was solved.

Tarmac_Terrorist
Read lots about tyre rumble on other forums. I think VW's fancy 4 wheel alignment / tracking set up resolves this.
