CarMad
The 320d has plenty more power, its as refined as the petrol and gives you 50+mpg driver fairly chilled out. Oh and welcome to TSN.
NewNiceMrMe
My wife had an E46 320d SE saloon for 3 years from new. It was faultless in that time and had plenty of torque and ability. It's a bit of a boring car in SE guise but it always returned 44 mpg on the combined cycle. Basically it was a very good car and much better than the 318i SE I had a few years beforehand (when the E46 first came out). She did 50k in 3 years. Oddly enough shes managed 53k in 2 years and 10 months in the RX and that has been faultless too. The build is better than the BMW was.
SINGH
320D is a great engine, just make sure you familiarise yourself with the 'swirl flap' problem they have, get them removed asap. Its £200 now and will save your engine in the future. I recommend PMW in Essex to do the swirl flap thing I travelled a 3 hour round trip to get to them as they know exactly what they are doing. CarMad
I thought the swirl flap issue wasn't an issue on the e90's depends which model he is after I guess.
SINGH
Ah, sorry I just assumed you were after an E46 for some reason, I dunno why!

Mac
The e46/e90 thing is interesting. When I bought mine I went out looking for a 'new' 3 series. I struggled to find one I liked  I ended up finding a couple of the last e46 soft tops and buying one of those. Much preferred it. Not that it's relevant. So I'll be quiet.
