What's going on - Golf GTI/R availability?

32 posts in this topic

What's the latest delivery on GTI/R?

Our local VW dealer is offering several GTI/R from stock e.g. VOLKSWAGEN GOLF 2.0 TSI R 4MOTION 5dr DSG

£31,495

I thought there was a 5 month wait for GTIs and 8/9 months for R?

I get the feeling VAG tend to limit supply into the UK to create an artificial demand exceeding supply situation. Which is why people have to wait a ridiculous 3-4 months for a bog standard Polo from some dealers.

I would say your dealer has found a way of bypassing normal VAG UK supply channels. Or he's been incredibly unlucky with a number of cancelled orders! I would be checking to make absolutely sure they are UK spec.

I think the cars kicking about the dealers at the moment are ex demos. If you can get one in the spec. you ant you'll get a good deal otherwise it's a long wait. I'm hearing people waiting for Rocco Rs for over 10 months

Agreed - most R's with Dealers are Demo models. If you're after an R with DSG, be prepared for a long wait !! Anything on a forecourt though will be there to be haggled over !!

garcon/Cuprabob/TP27, thanks and noted.

I'm not prepared to wait months and support the dealer with a nice deposit.

I drove the new WRX Sti the other day.

Four wheel drive, 300ps as you may know. V. nice but did not tick all the boxes for me.

I decided however not to jump ship to Subaru, just yet!

Ludwig

p.s. sorry to go off topic re. the WRX STi

That's ok.

Was that the 4 door saloon? It's an improvement on the 2008/9 car, but exchange rates have pushed the list price a few grand too high.

garcon, yup - the 4 door saloon in Spark Silver metallic.

Price was ridiculous at £33,295 I recall.

He did offer a very good p/ex for my GTI though! Ha-ha.

If you ae flexible on Spec, there are a fair few Golf R's available. That said, on other Forums there are loads of folk who are getting well hacked off with the VAG delivery times for most models !!

TP27, I'm fairly flexible on spec I think.

I would have gone for an Audi S3, but the shape is pretty fuddy-dudy isn't it?

I just wish the new Ford Focus ST was available now, I'd almost certainly defect.

I've also been looking closely at the Lexus IS 250 F-Sport, everything standard incl V6, auto, bi-xenon, leather and 208ps.

Having said that, without seeming to be big-headed, I think I got it right in 2006, the GTI MkV is the best car I've ever had. A hard act for others to follow!

Send me some spec of what you are after and I will see if I can find you a suitable match! We got Woppums Scirocco R delivered to him within a week or so from memory!

If you still can't PM me, TP27 has my contact details.

MattR, thanks. I was hoping that you'd see these exchanges and respond!

I've tried to PM you at least twice in the last couple of weeks. Did not seem to work?

I'll let you have GTI spec I'm after.

Can TP27 let me have your contact details please? Try PM if you want to.

....Which is partly why I still have my Mk5 GTI.

I don't like any of the current Scirocco's but I do like the Golf R, but such a long delivery time is silly. Back in 2005 I found 12 weeks waiting difficult. In fact, while waiting and searching for info is how I discovered TSN. When my GTI finally arrived I really thought I'd be saying "Cheers guys, really good knowing you" etc but over 22,000 posts later I'm still here!!

I think some of you may find its not just UK supply. If you goto other websites you will find all of europe supply is taking this long.

You're looking at 20 weeks minimum now and reading varied Forums, that's optimistic !!

....I thought that Volkswagen had set out to make the Mk6 more efficient and cheaper to manufacture. I would normally expect 'efficient' to mean 'less time to produce' in the context of a factory.

Two issues - their market is now huge with China and Asia being a main focus for sales and the fluctuations on currency don't help much either. I suspect that UK buyers are at the back of the queue and preference is given to delivering cars elsewhere in the world - but I may be wrong !!

You are not wrong!! That is exactly what is happening and its not unique to the VAG group either.

What i talk about below is what happened to my order and i suspect the same has happened this year.

VWuk has to book a certain number of production slots on the factory lines a year in advance.

What happens is VWuk and other countries often get it wrong in the amount they need to book.

Last year they booked less due to economy and underestimated the scrappage deal draw to customers.

This year im guessing they thought the VAT hike and end of scrappage would reduce demand more than it has.

So Dealers only get a ceratin amount of cars a month to sell but still sell more if they can which bumps the time up.

Other countries and UK also try and beg VW for more slots which often bumps other orders down the line and so on and so on.

VW have to get parts from parts suppliers who cut back on staff due to the economy and so cannot produce parts quick enough which holds VW up.

VW also cut back on production capability a few years back due to lack of demand and this takes time to get back upto speed.

Nearly all VWgroup factorys have hit these problems skodas delays are longer than VWs on certain models. And SEATs have a long delay on certain models too.

The fire in one of there factorys that build the scirocco has not helped reduce delays on that and other models made there.

The mk6 maybe quicker to build BUT thats no good if you don't have the capacity to build to the demand or the infantry to ship/deliver/store and handly this amount of extra production of cars or the supply chain to supply you with more components to make extra cars.

As i said earlier check other websites, other countries are waiting as long as the UK or longer especially if there country get there amount of slots ordered wrong.
