330dcoupe
Hi all, A little while back, i thought I had decided on a 106 GTi - but have now changed my mind and am in the middle of trying to negotiate a price for a 205 GTi. It's black and in mint condition - but I can't find how much the tax will be for this car - a year. Answers on a post card would be much appreciated. By the way - is it a good choice? Mook
Rattly top ends and rust are the killers on them. My '91 Golf GTI 16v is £185 a year (even with its 20v turbo lump), so I'd imagine it's a similar rate for the Pug Weirdly, as a JDM import, my Legacy is the same annual rate, because it doesn't have an official CO2 rating. Great choice. Light and fairly quick.
m4ttm4son
A 206 1.6 GTi or 205 1.9 GTi?
Mook
Or even a 205 1.6 GTI? :D
330dcoupe
Sorry, the title was meant to say '205' - From reading various old reviews, the 1.6 seems to be the better choice of the majority - I would have thought the more powerful 1.9 would be the one getting the plaudits. m4ttm4son
But no-one would get that over a 1.9 would they?
Mook
I'd have a 1.9 over a 1.6 - it's 16v GTI quick and they handle better. But rarer than rocking horse etc.
330dcoupe
But no-one would get that over a 1.9 would they? According to Clarkson, they were both equally as good. As well as buying it as an occasional run around - I could probably say that it's a safe investment too. Parts are easily obtainable and I don't have to worry about it having a main dealer SH or fanny about with it If I want straight line speed - then I wouldn't really be buying either -tbh. Suppose it's just the nicely of owning an icon.

NewNiceMrMe
Find a 1.9 instead. I had one and memory stills makes me think it was the fastest car I ever owned, even though it was far from it. For their day they were a very quick car and a superb one to drive. Non stop fun (and non stop rattles, it must be said).
theduisbergkid
According to Clarkson. Does anyone take his opinions seriously ? As I recall, there's not a massive difference in performance between the 1.6 and 1.9, friends had them back in the day, happy memories. I think they'd make a great occasional runaround and weekend toy.
Simon690
If you know the reg number you can check the Tax liability on this DVLA page Definitely go for a 1.9 as others have stated but make sure you get one with power steering if you are going to use it as a daily driver. aldo56
Having had both the 1.9 and 1.6 in the same car, i'd say plump for a 1.9 if you can. The 1.6 is a revvy beast where as the 1.9 has more torque. Crazy wee cars and i'd love one again!

saab
6 months = £112.75 12 months = £205.00 The rate is the same for the 1.6 and the 1.
Tarmac_Terrorist
I had a 205CTI (convertible). I really liked the engine - loved to rev and it got hell. The engine was the best bit about the car. The electrics were fragile. You could rag it hard and would always sound great month in month out. I found it rather arse end happy - in those days you could 'nip & tuck' as the roads were quieter but you had to be careful when 'tucking' in the wet. I was caught out a couple of time and found myself out of shape in such circumstances. I read somewhere not so long ago that the advancements made in tyre technology have pretty much eliminated the 205's rear end wild side - fit modern rubber and it handles even better! I loved the car - drove it hard then...flogged it to my sister lol
Tipex
If you have the same tyres front and rear, the cars inherent french tail happiness will remain!
