Scratch removal..Heated windscreen

Hi Guys....Well my car was dive bombed by an unknown bird(with feathers) and unfortunately for me the sh*t bomb scored a direct hit on the windscreen.....When I returned to the car the bird crap was well and truly baked on.....I soaked the the bird poo with soapy water and washed it off....thought nothing of it until I started to drive and then right in my line of sight were 3 small area`s of fussy scatches (1 to 2cm across)....very distracting...especially when driving into the sun.

Just done a quick google search....Looks like it could be polished out...but not too sure.....I was wondering if there was any DIY solution...or is it a case of giving autoglass a ring....Although as the windscreen is heated I`am tempted to give the Jag service department a call first.

Any thoughts...or advice as to the best course of action.....as having read a few online reviews many punters don`t think too highly of Autoglass....Fully comp insurance with windscreen repair....although obviously it was my cack handed cleaning of the crap that scratched the glass.

Cheers

Hi Mr Man,

When removing scratches it generally works like this: Polish the whole surface and reduce its depth thus the scratch is no longer there as everything is as thin as the lowest part of the scratch. Where scratches are very deep you can often take the edge off of them which makes them less noticable. On glass its very hard to do either of these things very well.

A product called Jewellers Rouge is often used by people wanting to sort out the problem you have, it will probably take the edge off the scratches. There are a fair few new products, pads and polishes aimed at sorting out glass scratches but you would need a machine polisher and some serious time to "learn how".

Heated windscreens are a Ford product and have been used in the Escorts etc since the 1990's so it should not be to hard to get a replacement which i suspect is probably going to be answer!

What did you use to scrub the windscreen with?

Cheers.....I used soapy water(car wash soap)...let it soak for a while...the muck seem to wash off easily...no scubbing....However the muck was well and truly baked and rock hard....I can only assume it was full of grit or sand and the mere process of washing has scratched the screen....First time this has happened since I bought my first car in 1985....Next time I`ll be hosing the water off.....Did`t even think twice about any damage until I drove off into the sunset.....I can`t believe how distracting these fine scratches are.....You can`t help but be drawn to them.

A friend who owns a body-shop has had a look....He told me just to get the screen replaced.....If the scratches had been in the corner of the screen and on the passenger side then it may have been worth trying to polish them out......But as there right in my line of sight there`s a chance that polishing the screen may have left the glass very slightly distorted.....So not worth the time or hassel.....Just been onto my insurers to arrange for a new screen to be fitted.
