Wireless repeater for Sony TV

13 posts in this topic

Hi,

I have a Sony Bravia TV & Sony Blu-Ray which are Internet enabled & I'd like to connect them to the WWW.

Sony sell a dongle (£60+) which will do this but I'm reluctant to splash the cash as this seems expensive to me.

Has anyone used a wireless repeater/extender to connect their TV, etc to thier home wifi & if so any suggestions on the best product to use?

My plan is to connect both devices to a repeater (wired) & have it connect to my wifi (wirelessly) & out to the WWW.

Thanks

Buy a pre made cat 5 lead (screwfix / TLC do modest prices), a 15m one is sub £10 and hard wire to your hub / router ?

Any wireless hub would do the same thing, pretty sure you could (if you have USB on the TV) connect via a £16 netgear unit.

I'd like to avoid trailing cables from the living room, upstairs to the router. Wireless is my only real option

Does the TV have a USB port ?

Even if it does there's no guarantee that a USB WiFi adapter from another manufacturer would work. I tried 4 (or 5, I forget) different brands of USB WiFi adapter with my Samsung TV and none of them worked.

Yeah a friend of mine has a Sony TV and the only USB wireless dongle that works in it is the Sony one. Wireless repeater may work though as it's connected via the Ethernet port.

You could also use Ethernet Power adaptors which use the mains wiring to extend the network. I use them between my router and my BT Vision box without any problem

Another option is a wireless bridge, something like this. Though I'm not sure if you can plug a switch into the ethernet port to give both devices a connection. Nice thing about this one is it's USB powered so no need to find another power socket.

Thanks - looks like the netgear box could be worth a punt.

The TV / BluRay both have USB & both only work with Sony dongles!

This is what I'm planning to do with mine, have a BD-770 blu-ray and am waiting a few weeks before the new Bravia TV range hits the streets to upgrade the telly. The wifi connection I use atm just seems a bit flaky to stream movies over so am hoping some homeplugs will do the job better. Maybe its just Lovefilm though as the wifi connection to laptops and phones is usually rock solid...

I'd also heard that you have to buy the Sony dongle if you want wireless. No other will work.
