Tipex
As the thread title, the new iPhone is due to be announced tonight. Anyone got any inside info on what to expect over/above the 4? And anyone know where I can watch the announcement?
Mook
It's called the iPhone 5 - no sh*t Sherlock There's a load of info on ZDNet about it. Edit to add: live coverage and analysis http://www.zdnet.com/blog/hardware/apples-lets-talk-iphone-event-live-analysis/15086?tag=content;siu-container
m4ttm4son
There's rumour that it'll be just an upgrade to the 4, a 4S if you will. Or both a budget 4S and a super duper 5. If it's just a 4S, I'll be p1ssed off. I've been using my K850i since I lost my 3GS in April so that I could just ride it out til a shiny new iPhone comes out. I'm not too keen on the look of the 4, much prefer the rounded edges of the originals. There's an event at Covent Garden Apple Store. Not sure what they're doing though. Tipex
According to 5live, it's 'likely' to be thinner, and faster. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

NewNiceMrMe
Thinner Faster No need to plug it in to your computer for iOS updates It's an iPhone 5 but don't be surprised if they unveil a 4S as well.
TP27
It's an iPhone 5 but don't be surprised if they unveil a 4S as well. iPhone 4S already being 'marketed' - subject to launch, I'm told. Guess who's now out of contract with Vodafone and looking at the options !!
fizzbitt
i hope its just an update 4S as i cant get into a new contract as im emigrating next summer and cant commit to long term contracts!
NewNiceMrMe
I've just got an iPhone 4 in white for LittleMissMe (she's not gonna get it until her birthday though!) and I'm gonna wait until November for mine. I quite like the white iPhone. Looks kinda cool in a girly type of way.
fizzbitt
Aye they look alright. My family seem to be going towards Andriod though with 2 of them now owning a Galaxy S2 which has a very nice screen and love the Google navigation with street view. NewNiceMrMe
We have a client who is currently returning Blackberries (DOA) at the rate of 1 in 2. They're not happy cos they'd unpacked just over 300 of them...and 167 are dead.
TP27
Vodafone seem keen to keep me - I can have 'what I want' but I have to say, it's the HTC Desire, the Samsung Galaxy S2 or an iPhone I'm trying to choose from. Everyone is telling me to avoid the iPhone, as it's a crap 'phone !!! Blackberry Bold 9900 too - ?? Edited October 4, 2011 by TP27
fizzbitt
Cant say i like the Android split personality interface but the S2 is a really good device if not a tad bigger than the iphone. Dont know anything about blackberries though apart from i will be expected to get one if i move to toronto as its the done thing.
NewNiceMrMe
Everyone is telling me to avoid the iPhone, as it's a crap 'phone !!! Utter rubbish. They haven't sold millions and become the No.1 smartphone by being crap - they've done it by being the best by a long shot, in my opinion. I use one all the time TP and wouldn't be without it. As a 'phone' it does everything you could want. As a smartphone it is king of the crop for me.
TP27
I like the idea of the iPhone, as I can then bin my knackered iPod !!! That said, I need the device to be a phone, to work at all times and the iPhone gets bad press for constantly cutting out, mid-call !!
NewNiceMrMe
TP, they're talking rubbish. Again, millions of users wouldn't keep a phone they can't make calls on without 100% reliability. I'd quite like calls to cut out, but unfortunately they never do.

Just because millions of people have bought them doesn't mean they're good. Remember the Ford Escort used to be the best selling car :-)
fizzbitt
I have owned the same 3GS for over 2 years and i could count on one hand the amount of times its cut out due to crashing etc. The well documented issues with reception on the iphone4 are sorted when you put that rubber protector round the edge which im guessing any normal person would regardless to protect the phone. Remember the Ford Escort used to be the best selling car :-) Apple marketing is good, but it isn't that good. The phone is the No.1 because of how versatile it is and what you can do on it. I have nothing against Android but the iPhone suits me perfectly. Yes, a lot of people buy them because they seem to think it's the cool thing to do, but I've never really been that 'into' cool - as anyone who has ever met me will appreciate. Mook
I've never stuck a rubber protector on my iPhone 4 and it's never failed on any calls. Battery life has never been great (it lasts a day), but I'm used to that now (having previously owned Nokias that would last a week). It is 10 times better to use than the Blackberry I had before. It's personal choice, but he iPhone just works I've got an Android tablet at work, as well as an iPad, and the Android device is just too bloody technical. Not as in "I don't understand", as in it's just not as intuitive as it could be.
Tipex
I have an iPhone 3G, and a Galaxy S2, I use the iPhone. The Galaxy is alright, but it just isn't as good as an iPhone, the screen 'looks' nice, but is so inaccurate to use it feels like it was never designed to be a touch screen device, and the whole thing is simply too big, it dwarves an iPhone and while it's thin, it just feels like a comedy toy phone in your hand, it is well made, but not as well made as an iPhone, the battery cover for example, is an exceptionally thin fragile piece of cheap plastic. I don't get along too well with android either, it's too clunky and complicated, iOS by contrast is intuitive and quick.

For once I don't disagree with you. I've got a Sony Ericsson X10 Xperia and although it never did too well in reviews I really like it and it does everything I need from it plus it had a reasonable 8MP camera. when it comes to replacing it I will review all the the options at the time and buy the one that's best for me. If it's an IpHone then so be it. I have heard that the iPhone 5 will have an inbuilt pressure sensor so there can be a tyre pressure app. made available. Not sure why anyone would need that to be honest unless they are targetting the female demographic who don't know they have to check tyre pressures :-)
TP27
iPhone ticks most boxes for me and the way my discussions are going, I'll likely end up with an iPhone 4 (32 GB) for now't, on my existing cost plan. The iPhone 4S might be the solution though. Thanks for the comments, never meant to hijack !!
NewNiceMrMe
Ah yes, this one is going to run for a while isn't it. Look, Cuprabob, I'll get over it, but you'll always be Scottish.
