Hopsta
What time is it released?
Daz
Apple has not indicated a specific time of night or day for release, but the company typically launches on pacific time iOS3 & iOS4 were released at 10:00 PST so that would be 18:00 BST, so wait till you get home from work. Don't forget to upgrade your iTunes to 10.5 too.

Mac
Should be around 18:00 I think. It's a 'nice' upgrade, but no show stopper really for an existing iPhone 4. Feels a bit faster, the alerts are a little better, and I *think* battery life is better?
stooH
Will it work on my crappy old 3G and anyone reckon if it will be faster or slower than iOS 4?
Mac
I don't believe it's supported on the 3G.
Daz
You're right, it's not. iPhone 3GS, 4 & 4S, iPad & iPad2, iPod Touch 3rd & 4th Gen only.
stooH
I'll update the lads iPod at least then, is Siri [?] only available on the 4s? wondering what advantage there would be on a touch 4th gen.
Andy_Bangle
To be honest I didn't notice any speed changes when I updated my iphone 4 to iOS 5, I guess iCloud integration is the biggy but Reminders and Notification Centre are a nice touch. Daz
Yes, Siri is only available on the iPhone 4s.
Tipex
What with all this cloud stuff, and Siri, won't the iPhone 4S absolutely cane your data allowance? I'm in two minds about how buy mine, I'm leaning towards just spunking the cash on a sim free one, as I still have unlimited data on my 3G contract with 02. The theory is, that I buy the the latest iPhone every time one is released, and sell the previous one, I'd be taking a hit on the first one, but then every upgrade after that would be relatively painless due to selling the previous phone, as they seem to hold value very well. m4ttm4son
Could be the best idea. Only problem is you don't get free tethering with the old contracts. Most of the hardcore seem to buy direct from Apple and sell on their old one.
Mac
What with all this cloud stuff, and Siri, won't the iPhone 4S absolutely cane your data allowance?Well yes it'll have an effect. Most carriers are expecting big growths in data usage over the next 5 years. Some of the Edge spectrum is being reclaimed for use with 3G/4G for example.I'm a big user of mobile data - top 5% in our company apparently - and I average around 1 to 1.5Gb/month. In terms of purchase model - it's the eternal capex/opex argument Personally, I prefer low operational (monthly) costs as I get paid sporadically, therefore I don't like monthly bills. For me then capital outlay for the phone+cheap contract works Also means of course that you get the latest kit as and when you want, rather than being limited by contract upgrades. Tipex
That's cool, I don't do tethering anyway, my laptop never leaves the home and anything I'd want to do on it I could do on the phone anyway!

NewNiceMrMe
I'm a big user of mobile data - top 5% in our company apparently - and I average around 1 to 1.5Gb/month. I vastly over estimated what my use of mobile data would be on my iPad. I took out the 3 contract for 10gb a month at £15. That was, ooo, 18 months ago? So, 10gb x 18 = total available use I could have had = 180gb. The use stats on my iPad which have never been reset say: Sent: 311Mb Received: 2.0Gb A fifth of one months allowance. Argh. I keep meaning to change it whenever threads like this make me think about it.
bazza_g
Apple geek in store today confirmed 6pm UK time for IOS 5 - I went in to pick up an Apple TV to take advantage of Airplay Mirroring on iPad2, looks cool for gaming Does anyone know if Apple TV will be able to access all your iTunes purchases via the cloud thing? NewNiceMrMe
I don't think Apple TV will let you do that, no. I've got it and I'm not sure how that'd work, but you have got me thinking now....

Beta firmware for AppleTV does allow this apparently - I haven't bothered downloading it however as it would involve unplugging said AppleTV and moving it a couple of metres. burble
It's still saying that 4.3.5 is the latest for my iPhone and iPad. I'll try again in a few hours.
Mac
Yeah gets flooded unfortunately. Also, as a side-note, you'll need the latest copy of iTunes too - 10.5 - otherwise it won't download & install IOS5.
burble
iTunes popped up to tell me that iOS 5 was available but couldn't download it, saying 'the resource is not available' or similar as soon as I told it to download. I'll try again in the morning I think.
bazza_g
hmmmm IOS5 downloading now for my iPhone but it still reckons 4.3.5 is the right version for the iPad2?
