High Mileage RS4 Avant

Hi All,

Thinking of buying an RS4 (for the wife and baby - honest).

Was going to look at one today which only had 27k on the clock but en route got a call from the dealer to say someone had walked in and bought it.

The only other one that really stands out to me at the moment has 80k miles on the clock. Just wondering if anyone can shed some light on potential issues with high mileage RS4's.

Dealer has assured me that it had Cambelts at 60k and that it has 4 new tyres. He also mentioned that brakes would have minimum 50% of their wear remaining.

My main concerns would obviously be clutch and gearbox, although it does sound like this car has covered most of its miles on the motorway so hopefully wear will be minimal.

Any comments much appreciated.

Which RS 4? There is the B5 2000-2001 or the B7 2006-2007 or 8 approx.

The B7 hasn't got a Cambelt so I'm assuming it's a B5, but it wouldn't be the first time Audi got it wrong. I rang them to get a price on a Cambelt change for my RS6 and they said it didn't have one, which is untrue.

It's a 2007 B7 on a 56 plate. I must admit I wasn't sure whether the B7 used belts or chains when I asked the question, but since he told me they were changed at 60k I didn't bother researching any further.

Does not install too much confidence when salesmen get simple questions like this wrong

I've higlighted the important bit here.

Salesmen - they know shi1t about the actual nuts and bolts of a product.

Your best bet is to get more info and then go see it, drive it with that info in hand. Find out what options it has, haggle hard due to the mileage. Check the tyres are the correct ones too - very important as they need the XL tyre.

Personally, I love high mileage cars. It means (to me) that it has been used for cruising up and down motorways and also should have been fixed if it goes wrong, as it could have been an 'only car'/company car?

I think I'd be more comfortable buying a high miler RS4 from a specialist than an Audi dealer, because as we've already established, Audi dealers know absolutely f*ck all about their own cars.

RS246 is certainbly the place for more knowledgable advice. I'd be very wary of imminent bills for expensive wear and tear items. And suspension?

No it does NOT have one your right, so the dealer is bullshitting end of.

There was never any doubt that they weren't!

Anyway, have been to see said car and it was not as tidy inside and out as they had suggested. Drove quite well though, althugh was a bit concerned about a small judder when pulling away in 1st. Usually i would have put this down to a worn release bearing, and it is not that bad but obviously could get worse.

End result was I made a low offer which they have not accepted so walked away, think I would rather spend a few thousand more on a better example unless I could get it for a steal.

Yes, buy the best & only cry once. As other said have a look on rs246 these cars are solid & well built generally with just a few well documented problems so it should be fairly easy to sort out a good one with a little research beforehand.
