Scumball cars - what would you buy now?

Having just bought a snotter for next to nowt, it got me thinking. If you were doing the Scumball now, over 5 years after it's inception, what would you buy?

In those 5 years, the sheddy cars that we all bought probably can't be bought any more. This paves the way for some newer, arguably better cars for less than the limit of £1000.

So, rough rules are:

Value not more than £1000

You are allowed to go over budget on safety features such as brakes, seats, harnesses etc to make it more suitable

You are not allowed to buy your mates Bentley for £1000, that's cheating

You MUST be happy to take £1000 for it if offered

The Scumball was awash with E36 BMWs so let's leave those out, we've all seen them before.

What would you buy? +++

1,000 miles there and back, plus however many laps of the Ring as your car and you can handle.

I'd buy an almost dead 1.8T in anything - stick a bigger turbo on it and make sure it was left in Belgium on the way back after it died.

Either that or an MX-5 for £200 and stick a used supercharger on it.

Nothing standard though. That'd never do ;)

If you just want a luxury barge that has a high likelihood of breaking down, then a Jag or old Merc is your option.

But the driving to the Ring is only part of it. If you want to have some fun while you're there, at least take something that'll handle and stop, even if it's not that quick +++

Great thread Ben, I happened to lunch with Lord Omar of Scumball today, and we had a few laughs about Scumball as we usually do.

In my experience, reliable stuff goes pop before you hit Dover, and ropey French/Italian/Brit stuff gets you there and is more entertaining.

On my list (with some haggling) would be...

Fiat X19 Bertone 5 Speed (1982) (Trade Sale) (34,000 miles) | eBay

and...

TVR TASMIN 280i 1981 WITH TAX AND MOT | eBay

and...

JAGUAR V8 XJ8 3.2 V8 Exec, 4 Doors, Automatic, Saloon, | eBay

But I think, I'd have this one, to trump everything else.....

2001 Alfa Romeo 166 3.0 V6 24v Sportronic auto Turismo | eBay

How about some of these...

British reliability...

1978 MG MGB gt

Non turbo version, but Mook says just whack a supercharger on...

1998 MITSUBISHI GTO COUPE

Gear box might go pop but you;d have fun making it happen plus you can unbutton your shirt and slip a medallion on...

2000 MERCEDES-BENZ CLK 430 Avantgarde Tip

Reliable?

1998 HONDA ACCORD 3.0i V6 2dr Auto Coupe

Didn't realise how slow these actually were, misty memories made them faster than a Veyron

1996 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF 2.8 VR6 3dr Hatchback

My mate Dazzer took one of those in '08, spent hours lovingly spannering it, only for it to repeatedly break down. Too sensible.

Right, I'm feeling the love for this 'Gti', what could possibly go wrong ?

Awesome, it's not worth £800, but it's still awesome, fast as feck in a way only something that old can be, it's basically a Pug 205 GTi 1.9, it's mostly made of plastic so weighs next to nothing!

Given everyone else seems to be going over budget, heres my £1500 Scumball car-

Skoda Octavia 1.8 20V Turbo 4X4

As Mook says, 1.8t is extremely tunable, It's got (pretend) 4wd, so will launch well, and there will be shed loads of cheap second hand bits off VRs's to make it handle better!

And I dare say if you put a bit of effort in, you'd find one for under a grand.
