Andy_Bangle
After we got our first-taste of the new RS4 through a handful of leaked images earlier today, Audi has now officially pulled the sheets off the flagship model of its A4 series. The RS4 makes its comeback as a Avant featuring the same 4.2-litre V8 engine found in the RS5 models. The naturally aspirated eight-cylinder unit is good for 450PS (444bhp) at 8,250 rpm and a peak torque of 430 Nm (317.15 lb-ft) available from 4,000 to 6,000 rpm. That's a 30bhp improvement over the previous RS4. Audi's seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch automatic transmission and quattro permanent all-wheel drive with up to 70 percent flowing to the front or as much as 85 percent to the rear with a default 40:60 ratio, transfer power to the road. According to the German automaker, the RS4 Avant can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h (62mph) in 4.7 seconds and reach a governed top speed of 250 km/h (155mph), which can be increased to 280 km/h (174mph) upon request, while consuming less than 11lt/100km on average (25.7mpg). Like other RS models in Audi's range, the RS4 Avant features a revised chassis. Among other upgrades, there's a new speed-dependent electromechanical power steering, a taut suspension setup that lowers the body by 20 millimetres (0.79 in), and a new brake package with 365 millimetres (14.37 in) front discs. As an option, Audi offers 380-millimeter (14.96 in) carbon fibre ceramic discs with six-piston calipers for the front axle. The RS4 Avant rides on 19-inch, ten-spoke forged aluminium wheels shod with 265/35-series tires as standard, but Audi also offers 20-inch wheels with 265/30-series tires as an option. In typical Audi fashion, the RS4 Avant is subtly aggressive featuring newly designed bumpers, side skirts, a rear diffuser, a different front grille in a matte aluminium-look finish with a honeycomb insert, slightly flared wheel arches, a discrete roof spoiler and aluminium mirror housings. Audi says that the RS4 is 20 millimetres (0.79 in) longer and 24 millimetres (0.94 in) wider than the A4 Avant, but 20 millimetres (0.79 in) lower. In the cabin, we find a pair of sports seats and a flat bottom, multifunction steering wheel up front, along with carbon inlays on the dash and aluminium inserts on the door sills. Like the regular A4 Avant models, the RS4 offers up to 1,430 litres (50.50 cu ft) of cargo space. After its world premier at the Geneva Motor Show next month, the RS4 Avant will arrive in European dealerships in fall 2012 with a base price of €76,600 in Germany. Scotty
So that's £64k then? Wasn't the B7 RS4 about £40k? Feck me! £64k is a lot of dosh for an A4.
Daz
The B7 RS4 was about £50k but that was over 6 years ago now. doesn't time fly
garcon magnifique
If that's right it'll be circa £25k more than an S4. That's a big jump. Quite like the RS6 style flared arches.
Riz
Urgh, not a fan of the styling but glad they have stuck with the engine. Riz
byron13
B7 came in at about £53k all loaded new (ex Sports Suspension Pack) It is mucho money but seriously I think it looks great to me, subtle, proper Quattro and the lovely V8 which with the new FSI should he hopes get 250 miles per tank?? My old B7 was in for juice every 180 miles or so. I think 440bhp is enough and very happy it has not gone back to turbo days, the delivery will be sublime. Avant only?? this time I think is a good call. Possibly a great call at 6 months old for me if I can negotiate me back in to a fast car!!! Alfa is pretty but not exactly sporty!! Scotty
Be very interested to see how this one performs. The axle is much further forward/engine further back on the B8's so with the V8 not hanging out front so far as it did in the applauded RS4 it should be pretty good. PetrolDave
it looks great to me, subtle subtle is one thing that an RS shouldn't be. The B8 RS4 has got a big thumbs down on rs246
Daz
The B8 RS4 has got a big thumbs down on rs246 That happened to the B7 when it was announced too.
eldavo69
RS246 have given a car they've never driven a thumbs down and anyone should be arsed??? That's because all the B7 RS4 owners know their depreciation wagons will take another hit. And the RS3 owners get shown what they could have won. Daz
It did once people got to actually drive them, but they were all moaning when it was announced, no turbos, not as aggressive as the B5, etc.

Biscuits
I like the look of it and it being an Avant is a good thing, not sure any other marque does fast estates as well as Audi. Do think it's missing something though... there's no 'wow' to it. New M3 will be a tri-turbo six pot, RS6 was a twin-turbo V10... think they should have stuck a couple of turbos on it and then everyone would be thinking "remapped monster!" Riz
Yes I was a big fan of the B7 RS4 because it was a turning point for Audi, it put the RS brand in the right direction and more towards a drivers car.... the problem was quattro GmbH did not continue to built on the success of the B7 RS4 in terms of innovation. The new RS4's engine for example is nothing new..... they really should have cracked the 500bhp mark for the world to notice. Does anybody remember the B7 TopGear review, epic! Andy_Bangle
Pricing for the all-new, third generation Audi RS 4 Avant will start in the UK at £54,925 OTR before buyers check any options, with first customer deliveries to begin in the autumn. The RS4 is available exclusively as an Avant and is powered by a high-revving, naturally aspirated V8 engine that generates 444hp (450PS) at 8,250 rpm and peak torque of 317 lb-ft (430Nm) between 4,000 and 6,000 rpm. A standard seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission transfers powers to all four wheels via Audi's quattro system with the German carmaker quoting a 0 to 62 mph (100km/h) sprint time of 4.7 seconds and a governed top speed of 155 mph (250km/h), which can be increased to 174 mph (280km/h) if required. Audi says the new RS4 Avant delivers an average fuel economy of 26.4mpg. Among other features offered as standard are the 19-inch forged alloy wheels with with 265/35-series tyres, power adjustable sport seats covered in a combination of black leather and Alcantara, a DVD-based satellite navigation, Bluetooth mobile phone preparation, cruise control and Audi Music Interface iPod connection. Available options include carbon fibre-ceramic brake discs and a new £2,250 Sport Package that adds the Dynamic Ride Control (DRC) system, 20-inch wheels and a sports exhaust system. DanG
26.4 Average MPG. Impressive, well, not really, but better than the M3, just, it's nearest rival. I still feel that Audi didn't really try to push the boundaries with this model. Nice safe B8 platform, nice safe old engine. Should have been V8 turbo Will be interesting to hear how it drives. Chris Harris is driving it this week, and he's a good gauge IMO.
Biscuits
Well done Audi, caught up with the E92 M3.... till the new one is out next year that is. Will look nice and be well built though
Woppum
That mpg is miles better than an m3. V impressive. What's not impressive is its weight and power. Think it looks good and they have done great work keeping the price so close to the 05 model though.
Milo
That mpg is miles better than an m3. V impressive. And it'll be about as achievable as me collecting gold in this summer's women's beach volleyball at the Olympics. It's absolute nonsense to expect that car to return that mpg with everyday use.
