[Audi A3/S3] A3 2.0 TDI judder

Hi,

First time posting on the forum, although I've been a reader for the past few years since I got my A3. I'm hoping you might be able to shed some light on a problem that has recently started with my car.

It is a 2005 A3 2.0 TDI with 120,000 on the clock (100,000 of them done by me, 90%+ of which is motorway driving). Since its last service, I have noticed a slight judder on acceleration, especially in the higher gears. Otherwise it drives fine, and TBH you would struggle to notice the judder if driven very gently. It is the same whether cold or running temperature. It feels as if the engine is missing a beat, stuttering a little.

I'm not a "hard" driver (but I do like to "drive" a car), and the judder is noticeable on harder acceleration, then it goes. It's hard to tell for sure, but when cruising at a constant speed, then there might be a little unevenness in the engine, but that might just be me imagining it! some days it is worse than others.

The only difference I've noticed since the last service is that the exhaust no longer blows smoke when I drop a gear and/or accelerate hard. It has always been a bit of a smoker from new (I got it at around 20,000 miles), but now there is nothing, not even if I drop a gear and floor it!

I took it to the garage (and they are pretty good there - independent Audi/VAG specialist), but they could find nothing, no faults when plugged in, and on that day there was no judder during the test drive. However the judder is back and I think it's going to need to be sorted out, as I rely on my car every day. The mechanic suggested (in the absence of finding anything wrong) that it might be the flywheel beginning to go, but would I not feel this on initially engaging gear? I really don't know ...

Any suggestions would be useful. I will pop back to the garage this week, so any information in advance would be great, as I really can't afford expensive repairs which may not turn out to be necessary.

Thank you for reading :)
