Alfa GTV knowledge?

2 posts in this topic

Been offered an 02 plate GTV lusso for what seems like very reasonable money.

As expected, some of the electrics don't work, but it seems in good shape mechanically @ 94k miles.

Any input as to what to watch for?

Looking for something to put miles on.....

Rear suspension knocks and rattles - it's a complex multi-linked setup with lots of bushes and linkages which wear - however, it does give the car passive rear wheel steer and excellent handling.

Most TSpark engines have an appetite for oil - you'll be wanting to check it every 500-1k miles, and expect to top it up, especially if you drive it hard.

Again, on TSparks - cam belts. Alfa originally set the change at something like 72k miles - but then revised it down to 36k miles or 3 years. It's vital that you stick to this, and buy the full kit including tensioners and balancer shaft belt. If you ignore this advice, you WILL end up with a snapped belt caused by seized tensioners. There is also a 'cam variator', which will make the engine sound like a diesel if it fails - usual advice is to change with the belts, but that adds around £100 to the cost, so I've always done it every other change without issues.

If it's a V6, look out for belt changes - every 60k miles (but best advised at 48k) and around half as much again as a TSpark change - the V6 also had some issues with the rear bank cylinder head, can't recall what, but I suspect it was something to do with belts, tensioners and cams.

Finally... rust. If there is any, it has been crashed and cheaply repaired - they're a galvanised shell, so the body shouldn't show any signs of rust at all - however, floorpans can still rust.
