One for HR experts...

So, I have my job offer.

But they want to go to my doctor to get my medical history.

During the recruitment process, there were no questions regarding health or time off sick - this is the first time it has come up.

I have a form, on which I have to declare any major periods of illness during my current employment - so I will have to declare my heart attack and 2 months off work.

Obviously, the condition is well under control - through lifestyle adjustments and medication, so I barely even think about having a problem these days.

However... and this is where I could do with someone with HR experience... could they legitimately withdraw the offer because of my heart condition, even though it's under control an hasn't given me any issues since leaving hospital over 2 years ago?

Just shown this to MrsEldavo as she's a GP and she says it would be discrimination if they attempted to withdraw their offer.

If you don't smoke, aren't diabetic or known to have any genetic heart problem and have normal cholesterol levels then any report will confirm that your condition is under control. The fact that you're not controlling machinery or driving others counts for you too.

Based on my limited experience as an employer, if the doctor reports that it is all behind you and is not such as to affect your ability to carry out the role, then no.

If he wimps out and says its sorted for now but you never know, best not put him anywhere stressful, then you may have a problem.

Go & talk it over with your GP first, I'd say.

I'll see if I can get in to see the cardiac specialist at my GP's surgery to see what they're likely to report back.

I did think they'd be on very dodgy ground if they withdrew, as I haven't had a single day off sick since I returned to work - which was back in April 2011.
