M8CKN
My parents have come over from France to collect a new car this weekend, having bought it 4 weeks ago and been told it will be ready for them. They arrived home yesterday to be told it could be 2-3 weeks, as their private number plate transfer is in limbo, as the Leeds DVLA office has shut down (as have all regional offices apparently) and their transfer is in the huge backlog being dealt with by Swansea. I did a bit if digging, and found the regional offices arent being shut until September at the earliest, Leeds is happening on 13th December. The dealer has told them their PX has already been moved on....my suspicious mind says someone may have f'd up and sold it on with their number plate and they are tying to get it back somehow. Their contact is off today as well...dad is p1ssed off big time!!
Booster
Could well be true. Had a customer who purchased a new Mini and the transfer took five weeks. They are also looking into transfers more due to the massive amount of fraud going on in the private plate market.
shark_90
I was waiting for 4 weeks for a plate transfer recently, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's true.
CarMad
Yeah I've heard similar. A colleague at work just got a boxster and he gave up waiting and took delivery without the plate on in the end.
Booster
Yeah I've heard similar. A colleague at work just got a boxster and he gave up waiting and took delivery without the plate on in the end. That is what I would do. Take the car and get the plates sorted later. collease
We are currently telling customers with reg transfers that it is up to a 6 week turn around for them. Our local office has shut though and things have become an absolute nightmare. With the new registrations coming as well it is not going to be a very happy time for a lot of dealers. I agree with CarMad and Booster if i had the choice. Take delivery then sort the registration. It would be easier until DVLA have their act together. Cuprabob
The pain of taking the new reg and then changing later is that most insurance companies charge an admin fee of circa. £30 to change unless you wait until the renewal and do it then. You also have to remember the old registration for servicing, warranty, parts and recovery which is also a minor annoyance.
hashluck
Yes all true. Just done a retention and transfer and it took many weeks. Local DVLA office helpless and apologetic. All closing soon, which is rubbish
Tipex
until DVLA have their act together. They've never had their act together, and this will only make things worse. The service from the DVLA has always been awful, however, they have no one to answer to and can pretty much do as they please, and they know it, so expect to see them back on Watchdog with yet another spokesperson pretending to give a shît but making it obvious they don't! Twinspark
The DVLA swing from being exceptional to being awful without any reason, though. They'll often turn around V5Cs in days, and if I tax something online, the disc will usually be with me within 48 hours. But for 3 years now I've been bouncing letters about my Alfa 75 with them - someone filled out the original registration with 'Z's instead of '2's... and the advent of MOT computerisation has caused the system to throw a fit every year. I've decided to ignore them now, as I've given them the correct info. 3 times, yet they refuse to believe the VIN plate is correct and the V5C is wrong. patently
they refuse to believe the VIN plate is correct and the V5C is wrong. They're the DVLA. The physical piece of metal IS wrong, if it disagrees with them.
Tipex
The DVLA are never wrong, the staff and systems are infallible, despite all the problems they have, it's always everyone else who's wrong, they actually said that as well.
CarMad
I just saw this on the BBC so it backs up what was said the DVLA is somewhat failing pretty much everyone in centralising everything to Swansea. Cuprabob
Yes, I saw that yesterday. At the beginning of next year the powers at be will have a new directive and instead of everything being done centrally, they will have local offices dealing with it and expect praise and a big bonus for coming up with the great idea. Biscuits
I'm just taking the car on a 63 plate and sorting private plate at my leisure. DVLA are taking 3-6 weeks for plate transfers.

Ian_C
Just been dealing with a nightmare scenario - two cars wearing the same plates! 12 plate black Citroen DS4 insured by Mr AS, but wearing the same plates as a 12 plate white Citroen C3 insured by Miss AB. The number plates stuck on the DS4 bring up the C3 VIN - not the VIN off the DS4s bulkhead. The knock on effect is the DS4 owner has given his insurer the VRN for a C3. I asked surely he hasn't received a tax reminder from the DVLA (because these would go to the C3 owner) to which he replied no, checked his tax to find it ran out in June...... Thankfully he bought the car from a main dealer, so genuine human error rather than a dodgy stolen / rung car.
steve2
I took the forms in on Monday to our local DVLA office at 11.15 to transfer over Lindsay's plate from the old rav4 to the new one and came home today at 1pm and the new tax discs, mot's and the number plate authorisation are sitting on the mat, 48 hours is not too shabby although the office is shutting in 3 weeks time and the staff were really helpful
Chick
I use the same DVLA office as Steve2, had a very quick turn around for the V5, not even a week for it to be returned - and I walked out there and then with the new tax disc Such a shame the local offices are all within their final weeks of disappearing!

Chick
It's a real shame Ian, most of the people in our local office have worked there for years and when I spoke to them a few weeks ago, very few had new jobs to go to. Dread to think the chaos that will ensue Swansea, these local offices with staff using with the skillset are no longer available.
steve2
The two ladies that were working at the office on Monday were very cheerful and extremely helpful to everyone I saw there, so much so that I filled in a customer satisfaction form praising them although I know it will do no good but the ladies really appreciated it
