News_Stig
OK, GT-R style pedestrian safety measure bonnet pop-up thingy..... These pictures show the new 2014 Mini totally undisguised for the first time. The new Mini features distinctive LED daytime running light rings that encircle the entire headlamp unit. As expected, the car carries far larger rear lights than before. This Cooper S photographed also features a number of the performance variant's traditional hallmarks, including a rear roof spoiler, a dual centrally-mounted exhaust arrangement and an air intake in the bonnet. The car appears to have grown slight with a longer front overhang than the current car. Our photographer snapped the car during a filming ahead of the car's launch. The photos come days after revealed the first official technical details about its new hatchback: Petrol engines Turbocharged, direct-injection three- and four-cylinder petrol engines will be offered as part of the range. The launch 1.5-litre 3-cylinder unit gets 134 bhp and 162 lb ft ( 170 lb ft on overboost) from just 1250 rpm. The launch 2.0-litre 4cyl unit, meanwhile, gets 189 bhp and 206 lb ft (221 lb ft on overboost ). Both engines rev to 6 500 rpm, with further variants planned for future release. Diesel engines The sole so-far confirmed diesel is a common-rail direct-injection 1.5-litre unit with 114 bhp and peak torque of 199 lb ft. Efficiency is said to improve by seven per cent over the 1.6-litre unit it replaces. All pet rol and diesel engines will be offered with new manual and automatic gearboxes, with stop-start. Chassis New front- and all-wheel drive UKL1 platform (which BMW will also use) will lead to “even more precise and sporty handling” with “further advances in the area of driving comfort”. Wider tracks feature, the front strut and multi-link rear suspension is made more rigid, lightweight materials are used, and unsprung masses reduced. Rear entry and boot space is also improved due to redesigned rear axle. Adaptive dampers Electronically adjustable dampers make their first appearance on a Mini. Two driving modes will be offered: one “emphatically sporty”, the other “balanced and comfortable”. These will be controlled by a switch in the interior. Steering, brakes A next-generation electronic power steering system is said to “promote agility, driving safety and comfort”. A new torque-steer compensation system is fitted, which aims to reduce torque-steer issues powerful front-drive Minis have previously suffered from. A new braking system is said to be lighter and have improved friction. Body Despite a clear increase in size shown in the undisguised spy pictures, Mini says weight has been reduced. High-strength steels are used in key parts of the body to reduce weight, improve safety and increase agility. Tailored blanks also feature to help reduce weight. Safety An active bonnet is a new standard safety feature for the Mini 3. The bonnet is automatically raised in the event of a collision with a pedestrian at speeds between 12mph and 34mph. Extra crumple zones also feature.

DanG
2 litre turbo with 189bhp and 221lbs. I suspect they might be holding that back a bit - (for an AWD S version with 210bhp and 250lbs....)
bazza_g
Wonder if the bonnet will.... a) go off if you bump a cone on a track/low speed impact b) cost £10k+ to reset
DanG
are they really £10k to fix?!
Twinspark
I really want to like the MINI - externally they look good and all the reviews rave about how they drive. But... I note it still has a silly dinner plate in the middle of the dash, which I just couldn't live with.

m4ttm4son
My mum had a first gen new MINI and opted for Sat Nav which moves the speedo to another pod over the steering wheel. Looked so much better. Ruined it when they moved away from that idea. Is it so that you moany wife can chastise you for driving too fast? What is the point? Tipex
Other cars have this? Lots do, mostly French stuff, some Citroens and Peugeots have a giant digital display right in the middle of the dash, but some Toyotas do too like the Avensis Verso, there's a few others too.
