What does £160,000+ get you?

8 posts in this topic

It gets you a mighty fine stormer of the 'bahn.

This 'stormer' comes equipped with a V12 biturbo engine.  Also, comes with an AMG badge (or 2).

Mercedes-Benz has crowned the sporting side of its S-class line-up with a mighty new V12-powered Mercedes-Benz S-class S65 AMG.

The new model will reach the UK in April 2014, priced from around £160,000, after simultaneous reveals at the Tokyo and Los Angeles motor shows next Wednesday.

Powering the S65 AMG is a twin-turbocharged 6.0-litre V12 engine with  621 bhp  and 737 lb ft of torque. These help endow the 5246 mm-long machine with 0-62 mph performanc e of 4.3 sec and a top speed electronically limited to 155 mph.

With a reputed average economy of  23.7 mpg  and CO2 emissions of 279 g/km, Mercedes claims that the engine is also  the world’s most efficient V12.

The engine is hooked up to AMG’s Speedshift Plus 7G-Tronic seven-speed automatic gearbox, which has three driving modes including Sport and Manual. The gearbox replaces the five-speed automatic transmission of the previous S65 AMG.

Mercedes has yet to quote a weight figure for the S65 AMG, but the model features weight-saving technology including a part-carbonfibre bonnet, a lithium-ion battery and lightweight 20-inch alloy wheels. Carbon ceramic brakes are also optional.

Featuring as standard is an AMG-tuned version of the new S-class’s Magic Body Control suspension system that reads the road ahead and automatically adjusts the suspension to suit upcoming road conditions. Other standard equipment includes an ESP Dynamic Cornering Assist system, which reduces understeer turning into corners.

Unique styling details of the S65 AMG over more standard S-classes include a new front grille, larger front air intakes, revised side air intakes, a front splitter, new front and rear bumpers, twin sets of exhaust tailpipes, and new badging.

An interior fettled with special AMG equipment, including sports seats and a bespoke steering wheel, also features.

If I had enough money to own a fleet of exotic cars, then I could imagine that would figure in it.  But as a primary car or one of 2-3 cars, no.

So, Maybach is dead and MB are about to resurrect the Pullman name (hear that Wopps?).

What will it need to be like to top a car like the (long wheelbase) S65 AMG?

The only thing Pullman should be associated with are railway carriage services.  Anything else is sacrilege.
